Default In Tank Fuel Pump Seal

Morning

As ever, advice welcomed.

Fitted the FOC to the in tank pump a while ago (isn't getting the back seat out fun!) and ended up with a leak after nipping the lip of the seal when I put the retaining ring back on.

As you can imagine a strong smell of fuel when I topped up the tank. Order a new seal and fitted it very carefully, making sure the lip wasn't caught.

Fit and tighten up the retaining ring, much easier this time, and she's good to go.

Same problem with the fuel smell when I fill the tank right up.

I didn't have the tool to tighten the retaining ring to the correct torque but there was a painted line on the retaining ring and I took care to align the two halves of the line when I secured it.

So to my question. Is it that the retaining ring isn't torqued up tight enough (how does one find the correct tool) or does the Freelander use the same set up in which case a L/R dealer might have one.

Just as well I didn't clip the seat back in this time!!!!!!

Cheers

I doubt it's a torque problem. The usual cause of leaks is from misfitting the rubber seal onto the tank port lip. It will fit correctly in one position only. Details here: https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...ead.php?t=9108

Default In Tank Fuel Pump Seal

Cheers T Cut

Feared as much. I'll have a go at reseating it at the weekend.

Its a pain (in the back in my case) can't quite bend as well as I used to!

At least as I didn't clip it back the seat will be out in seconds this time.

The Mk1 broomstick with a notch cut in it proved its worth (once you know where the two seat clips are that is).

Just for my sanity. In your How To guide where the seal is pictured on the packaging (the part no 01 BMW............ is visible) that is lip that sits inside the tank isn't it?

It should also say 'This side down', which rather clinches it.

My Rover mechanic did mine last Thursday, changed the cap and seal, old seal had clearly been installed incorrectly, could see the distortion. Filled to the brim, no smell no leaks. Sorted!
