The typical symptom of pulley disintegration is a metallic click/clank when the engine's at tickover. The noise often reduces or disappear at higher revs. Also, lubricating the rubber interleaf (while it's running) using a hosepipe might quieten the noise temporarily.

Strangely (and sadly) Mine looked perfect when I took it off. However I've had the car since 150,000 miles and it is now up to 310,000 miles so I thought I'd change it anyway.

Working great now, so it was obviously on it's way out.
