I bet I win the 'who paid too much for a clutch' debate! : )
Shortly after joining the club I suffered a very public and humiliating breakdown in a supermarket carpark and had to have the car low loaded out, and taken to the garage Greenflag sent the truck from because I didn't know where else to go...
The slave was changed, and the clutch, and the DMF, and when the master cylinder failed a week later that was done also.... No car for almost a week in total, no loan car, no idea what bits are now in it (except to say it feels very different) And it cost me an eye watering £1400, pretty much what I paid for the car. More, really. Why didn't I scrap it? I like it. Anyway, I could buy have bought second hand car and have the same problem- so many are just cheaply bodged just to sell on. Had I realised Andy was mobile I would have snapped his hand off to have someone obviously revered by the club look at it... And I bet it might have been a lot cheaper and easier too!

You may recall that you did my clutch a few months back, and in reply to your question, absolutely not. The price was spot on!
I just hope my coffee was good enough, as it was a horrible day! |

I was very happy with the price for doing my V6 cam belts, you have to remember there is travel as well as labour to cover and the cam change is a bitch.

I'm currently saving up to have my clutch looked at by Andy - had a clutch changed by a non-specialist last year before I bought the car and it has never felt right. Also got a problem with the pedal not always returning all the way.
Personally, I believe that whether something is cheap or expensive it purely dependent upon what you're willing to spend. If you're willing to spend time and money researching one of the best recommended people to change a clutch, then you should be willing to pay whatever is needed. If you're determined to get the cheapest price you possibly can, then you might save a £ or two, but run a greater risk with quality This rule applies to almost anything (think of cheap ebay goods vs quality by well respected manufacturers) Personally, I think Andy's prices are really good. This whole thread reminds me of a story about Picasso. The story goes that Picasso was sitting in a cafe when he was approached by a woman. “It’s you — Picasso, the great artist! Oh, you must sketch my portrait! I insist.” So Picasso agreed to sketch her. After studying her for a moment, he used a single pencil stroke to create her portrait. He handed the women his work of art. “It’s perfect!” she gushed. “You managed to capture my essence with one stroke, in one moment. Thank you! How much do I owe you?” “Five thousand dollars,” the artist replied. “But, what?” the woman sputtered. “How could you want so much money for this picture? It only took you a second to draw it!” To which Picasso responded, “Madame, it took me my entire life.”

Andy Willi
For your expertise and time there is no way you are charging too much, you renewed our clutch (75 Tourer in York) at a very reasonable fee and ensured a 14 year old car could be kept on the road economically.

What worries me is when someone thinks £480 is expensive for a good quality clutch replaced in a 75/ZT cdti
I have never had Andy replace a clutch for me,but you bet when I want a clutch replacing his phone will be ringing (ding-ding) Labour prices vary around the country and so does quality from garage to garage.......BUT ANDY'S REPUTATION REMAINS THE SAME!!! Mick

My clutch had gone so after deciding I need the help of the clutch God a date was organised and up he came. I'm 90 minutes from him so he came to me and didn't have a clutch as they weren't in stock at his usual place. This didn't deter him he started got it stripped in a hour then went on his travels. 2 hours later hes back after travelling another 40 miles each way to pick it up. After changing it he said any problems in the future let me know ill be there.
I think all these posts are testament to the work and treatment that andy gives us. I for one are a very happy customer of his and I learnt a lot from Andy in that few hours he was here.

I drive an auto diesel so haven't needed your skills YET! When I get around to buying a manual you'll be the 1st port of call for the clutch, that I can promise

It's very clear that the service provided by Andy is great & there's no doubt about that.
Also very clear is that people are more than happy with the price charged. I would be interested to know as to why the question was asked in the first place ? |
