I got done for speeding on the A259 King's Road dual carriageway, which runs along the coast of Brighton and Hove. This is the main road serving the south coast, and is generally very busy. Although dual carriageway, this particular section of the road had a 30mph limit, and I got stopped in my Colt Galant turbo doing nearer 40mph. This was around 1986 iirc. Whilst remonstrating with the Police officers, a message came over the walkie-talkies they were using" yellow AA car, doing 50mph". I asked if I could wait to hear his excuse, but was dismissed! My excuse was if everybody kept to the 30mph limit, there would be queues back to Worthing...which even though probably true, cut no mustard with the Law.

I received No offer to take the Speed Awareness Course - Only, Accept the Fixed Penalty or a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal for consideration of a Prosecution - which I assume COULD led to a Dangerous Driving Charge if "unlucky". I wasn't even aware such a course existed until it was brought to my attention on the Forum here. Could it be due to the fact i was driving a Commercial Vehicle ? Paul. |

Let’s not forget cars have speedos for a reason, just as BMWs actually do have indicators….people just choose not to use them at the appropriate time.
Speed signs, restrictions, cameras etc are there for a reason, whatever that reason is….We may not like them but they are part of life. Accept it cos there’s pretty much diddly squat you can do about them all. Personally the 60 limit on the M4 after Heathrow followed by 40 limit just before it gets to 2 lanes annoys the hell out me…it’s a motorway FFS…but I stick to it because I don’t want to pay a fine and get points, it just ain’t worth the on-going hassle. So I get there a few minutes later…wow…the world is still spinning and I’m still alive. First time I picked up my points I was rushing to get somewhere….my fault, not the fault of the copper with his hairdryer. Twenty years later nabbed the next 3 points cos I was too busy chatting to notice the change from 40 to 30…again 100% my fault, not the fault of the fixed speed camera. I have no wish to pick up any more points so I pay more attention to what I’m doing which is driving a NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- heavy lump of metal. But hey it’s my choice to stick to the limits just as it is for those who choose to ignore them, and I laugh at them as many clearly don’t get the concept of average speed cameras but, hey, that’s another story…. How many times have you just sat back, enjoyed the ride, stuck to the limits and invariably arrived somewhat calmer and not much later than someone who sped their way to the destination? |

Oooh good, an opportunity for bored old people like me to rant for several pages. Well…
Just over 5 years ago (so the points have gone now ), I came out of a minor road from Caerleon onto a dual carriageway, drove off towards England at a very leisurely pace, and later received a NIP for doing 36. There had been no signs on the road to indicate that the speed limit on what was otherwise an ordinary dual carriageway was only 30. I went back to check, and found that the little side road had road markings to indicate that I was entering a 30 zone – however, they were almost worn away and I hadn't seen them. I contacted Newport Police about it, but was treated with dismissive contempt and veiled threats; when responding by letter to the Court summons, you also get the pretend opportunity to submit evidence of mitigating circumstances; I did so, but was ignored completely. I couldn’t be bothered to get into a court battle, so paid the fine. I’ve also submitted to hours of patronising humiliation on a speed awareness course on a previous occasion; anyone who thinks that trying to make someone who has made a minor error of judgement feel like a naughty child is going to achieve anything positive doesn't know much about human psychology. However, when much younger (1987), I was cruising round the North Circular in London at a relaxed 110 or so on my GSXR1100, and spotted in the mirror a police car tearing after me as I stopped at some lights. The lights went green when I judged the police still weren’t close enough to read my number plate, especially with my foot over it, so I took off and wiggled in a fairly random fashion through various side streets, eventually ending up going down Highgate West Hill. I was sure I’d shaken them off, so was trundling along about 20 or so, winding down. Rounding a sharp left hand bend, the wife of the Japanese Defence Attaché pulled out of the entrance to the diplomatic quarters on the left, turned right, and shaved the corner on my side of the road in her white Nissan Bluebird. It happened in an instant; no time to react. I hit her square between the headlights, somersaulted over the roof, and landed on the road on my NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- and elbows (I KNOW here’s a joke in there somewhere) – broke both elbows, permanently damaged the bits of the pelvis you sit on, also broke my left thumb, big toe, and three ribs. At 20mph. Maybe it was karma

Absolutely. Only the self flagellating British could end up feeling guilty for such an "offense".
As a result of all this conditioning, you end up with people like May - and get herded like sheep! Sheep get eaten.! Quote:
