Taking a 1.8T to 300bhp: What do you need?
Hi guys
I've been thinking about what I need to do/get to take my 1.8T to 300bhp. Mechanically, she is in brilliant nick so putting perishables and wear and tear aside, what parts do I need to uprate? Here's my first stab... 1. Ductile liners (£395) 2. Forged pistons and rods (£800) 3. Uprated turbo -I've been told that the turbo from the Nissan 200SX fits straight onto the manifold - need to confirm. (£250) 4. Remap - fortunately MEMS3 can be taken to the desired power (and beyond apparently). (£400? - some variables to this) 5. Uprated fuel injectors - not sure which to go for (£150) 6. Gearbox - I believe the ZT's use a Getrag setup. Is anyone aware of a good uprated set up that other motors use? The standard set up might be ok if I don't stress it too much but if there's a good alternative I'd be keen to investigate. (£???) 7. FMIC with as few pipes as possible (£200) 8... 9... 10... I'm glad the cranks good for 300bhp, keeps the bill down a tad. I'll add parts to the list as they come in - might be a useful for others. Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers James Last edited by Pistonbroke666; 8th December 2014 at 13:05.. Reason: Estimates added to parts |

That's a lot of power from a relatively small engine - it may be do-able but I doubt the engine would last long at those outputs. Not being a tuning bod my only contribution is that as you'd probably be running higher boost and fuelling you'd probably have to uprate the cooling system with a bigger radiator and possibly increase the flow too(get rid of as many bends and restrictions as possible, wider hoses, that kind of thing). Also a bigger oil cooler.
I'd be far more interested in turbocharging some of the earlier 1.4 K-series as used in the old 'wedges' - they didn't seem to have the same HGF problems and the turbo in something weighing only a ton would be a hoot. Last edited by Sector-9; 5th December 2014 at 16:49.. |

Answer ................................................ lots of money!
Some of the Elise owners are up over 400BHP with their K4 engines but .................................................. .... they have spent small fortunes to do it.

Have you seriously priced this up? - I believe it can be done but I doubt you'll get much change from £7K for a properly done/in anyway reliable engine......... I know you're almost certainly going to tell me different but

About the gearbox..I read somewhere that the Mini Cooper S 6-speed box could possibly fit bit I'm not sure at all. I just remember reading it. Just maybe something to look into?
I'm really impressed with your project and I hope you make it up to the magic 300hp, looking forward to see more! I can't see the problem with tuning a car for some more power? It suits the ZT's character, the chassi is perfect and I'm sure the engine can handle it too with the right parts. Go for it! Cheers

hmmmmm A ROCKET!!! I love the 75 but if you want a 300bhp luxury super saloon and want change from an already estimated cost of 7k why not look at this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-S60R...item1e96271107 Reliable, super safe, sophisticated, well built... Or if you liked what BMW did for the rover brand, why not buyone: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-BMW-5...item19f70ccdaa or if its the feeling of something that is no longer being built what àbout this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SAAB-2-8-V...item2c9207153f all of the above cars should do a cracking job of giving you a reliable/quick saloon. Thats my tuppence worth anywho, good look with the project if your heart is set on it |

Got to say i am very disappointed in the responses Pistonbroke has received in here.
I thought better of several of the people who have commented. He can do what he likes, can spend what he likes and be proven right or wrong, that to me is what being an enthusiast is. Half of you claim things you have no practical knowledge of, like how can you run 300bhp in a FWD car. The same was said many times before but there are quite a few road legal cars running up to 800bhp. Suppose that is pointless. I'm seriously thinking this isn't the forum for me either. It's not just on this thread either, it's every time some does anything other than keep is to factory spec and not do anything personal, the critics come out. Me, i'd prefer to support anyone doing anything. I may not like it, I may not want to do it, but i'll damn well support the person doing it. Our brand gets enough rubbish from other manufacturer forums so alienating the few that are happy to try something different is a joke. Good luck Pistonbroke, you know what you need pretty much anyway, but feel free to ask me OFFLINE (i.e not on the forum). |

Just Do It. I admire people who have the ambition, and capabilities to make something (different) of their cars. Will make a nice change (and I'm not being rude or demeaning here) from people cooing over a "real wood" steering wheel or going "wow" over a set of original wheels which they've picked up from a scrappy or E-bay saying they've "modified" their car. This will be a challenge for the OP and best of luck to him I say. Go for it, detail the work so we can see it. To both the OP and GeraintUK, this isn't real! It's cyberspace and people sometimes get a little carried away. I know.... PS. Brakes, suspension, tyres and of course insurance - last thing you would want to happen is for it to get written off for a cracked bumper with all of this work carried out. Best of luck. |
