which oil are we using
Hi i always just used a good 10w/40 semi synthetic but i was just on a well known oil site and all he recommends is 5w/40, so for a 190 what would you say to use ?
Thanks

5/40 exceeds 10/40 and I have found that it seems to eliminate the cold start chatter on the cams.

It is the most expensive of the two but probably best for winter use.--Back to the 10/40 for the summer.
The 5/40 being marginally less viscous will, maybe, let the engine spin over a fraction faster and take less out of your battery. Last edited by COLVERT; 6th December 2020 at 21:17.. |

Hamilton will be pretty cold in winter so use the thinner oil. I use Mobil 1

You might be interested to know what MG Rover says your engine needs (in RAVE): "Use a 10W/40 oil ... having a viscosity band recommended for the temperature range of your locality." The accompanying graph shows that both 5W40 and 10W40 span temperatures from above 35°C to below minus 30°C and are suitable for all engine types. Therefore the 10W40 semi-synth. which you're using at the moment is perfectly satisfactory but you can change to 5W40 if you want to. Probably the only difference that you'll notice is that you have less money left in your bank account. Simon
