Question Fitting alternative sport mode switch on indicator stalk - relay question?

I've now obtained a replacement indicator stalk with the trip push-button which I intend to use as an alternative to the badly-positioned snow/sport/econ switch to the left of the gear shift. I'm only interested in sport/econ as snow mode will never need a sudden response and can stay where it is. I've identified the sport/econ wires which require a momentary 12v-(neg) connection to engage. Each of the modes works on a turn-on basis only, i.e. nothing ever gets turned off apart from with the ignition. So:-
push1 - sport mode on
push2 - econ mode on
push3 - sport mode on
push4 - econ mode on

etc.

Whereas the existing switch is a momentary 3-way SP, the button switch is a momentary single throw SP. This presents the problem of engaging the modes as above and will - I think - require relay(s) to resolve.

I've never put together a flip-flop relay configuration and although I've researched it this afternoon, I can't see exactly what I need. This site has many configurations via its drop-list but nothing I can figure out as a solution.

Any suggestions please?

Dougie.

Do I take it that the original switch flips between poles on each push , but only makes momentary contact each time ?
Just wondering if this could be configured to help https://www.autoelectricsupplies.co....78/category/36

no, the original switch is always open 3 channel
the 3 switch positions are momentary inputs.

You may be able to do what you want with a latching relay with the NC output to ECON, the NO output to SPORT.

one press latches on to sport (delatching when ignition is off) and opening the NC enon mode line, latching back releases the SPORT line and remakes the ECON

trouble is finding a switching relay which will latch and break on the same input...

No, it’s three switches in one (tri-switch). It slides backwards and forwards and presses down. Each new momentary contact engages the selected mode which cancels the previous mode.

That link looks promising thank you. I’ll look into it.

Dougie.

may be easier to just piggy back this to the SPORT input line and use it to engage SPORT only, then, when driving is more relaxed you can reach down and engage ECON again...

Mind you if you need to be that quick on the trigger.... you may be driving too aggressively...

It’s a fallback idea certainly. Regarding the other, you spelt “progressively” wrong.

So it seems to me that this relay would in fact work, provided I ran a 12V- supply to pin 30 instead of the 12V+ shown below. (The diagram uses 56 & S in lieu of the more common 85 & 86 respectively.)

It would then alternately close and lock a ground circuit to 56a (Econ mode) and 56b (Sport mode) whenever the momentary switch was pressed on the indicator stalk. The only difference I can foresee from the manufacturer's arrangement would be the continual grounding by the relay rather than the momentary grounding by the OEM switch. It's the transmission ECU which deals with the signal; would it dislike a continuous signal?
