You take an expensive risk, buying a Merc without a full history, backed up by annotated workshop documentation and receipts. It costs to keep MB dealer service history maintained, but at least you can give any future prospective buyer peace of mind.

I agree - I would not touch a Mercedes without full dealer or recognised specialist service drocumentation.

I am keeping an eye out for a 2010 (when it was replaced with newer body shell) original CLS, preferably the special Grand Edition which had the Brabus tune as standard from Mercedes. The V6's have amazing performance for such a large and refined car.

I suspect I will only buy from a Mercedes specialist dealer such as Wildings of Paignton or Mercland of Nuneaton.

Ok, but if you look at the MOT history, it was a £40k+ car at the time of the first recorded worn tyres. So for most of its life it was a £20k+ car.

Tbh I personally maintain a car all year long best I can, but I throw it in for a mot and if it passes great and if it fails then I've missed something.

Rather get an official statement saying it needed xyz anyways myself personally as I use them and receipts for agreed value.

There are some folk to whom wealth is merely a convenience to purchase and forget any further responsibility.
I read about it all the time in the press. Sometimes it's "trophy wives" that are purchased.
Sometimes it's the fathering of children that is a casual consequence of some other expensive whim.
Cars,...!! they are way down the list of neglected responsibilities.

Kev.

I worked with someone who had a 30k car and ran tyres til they were near bald. He wouldn't be told, as far he was concerned he's spent enough money buying it.

Course the inevitable little incident with ditch occurred. No one laughed at all...

I was told that high end expensive luxury cars once they reach 5+ years old start to become generally undesirable as repairs start to be needed with the accompanying high costs for high end cars.

If you can afford to run and properly maintain a high end MB, BMW or Porsche you can afford a no worry, no repair bills lease on a new one.

A few years ago if the traction control or airbag light came on (or even the engine management light) you could live without it, but now will fail the MOT and diagnostics and repairs to such items as Traction Control and ABS at usually having to use main dealers can be horrendously expensive.

So true. Plus they cry when the car needs an oil change £180. Basic service £400, big service £700 and get this, my neighbour has just been told the ABS repair to her 5 year old car is £1500. It’s a Skoda.
My former brother in law checked absolutely nothing on his car “because that’s what servicing is for”. Got some horrendous bills for bald tyres, engine oil barely showing on the dip stick, especially when he forgot to get it serviced and faults mounted up. Was always proud he had a big house and 2 cars for him and his wife but drove around in rolling wheelie bins. What really is astonishing is the lack of safety awareness when they transported their 2 young daughters in those death traps.

I would cry if someone was charging me £180 to change oil. Over inflated dealer service cost.

BMW in Coventry. He stood for 10 minutes asking for a breakdown of the bill and got a long story about safety checks and cost of top quality filter and best oil, not forgetting the VAT. Minimum one hour labour charge. Still far too much.
If I supply oil and filter to my local garage he wants a £10 note. I must remove the undertray for him beforehand which is perfectly reasonable.

I get the impression that MOT garages just put advisories in to make it look like they're doing a good job ?
