VW T2 Bay Campers
I live near Santa Pod and this weekend was a washed out Bug Jam.
Saw lots of T2 campers about and it made me think what people see in them ? Some years ago a mate had one which me and the OH borrowed for a few days away posing in To be honest, it got lots of admiring looks and comments, BUT, it was small, cramped and uncomfortable inside. To drive, nice seating position, but handled like a brick, was slow and horrifically underpowered to the point on any sort of hill it was embarrassing. They look nice sitting on the drive or campsite but in my experience that's all.

you could say the same about many old vehicles.
We had a high top Comer van converted into a motorhome, boy did we have fun on holiday but I grew up with it and perhaps today would find it uncomfortable. Perhaps that's the thing, fun macafee2 |

I suppose it's like anything, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
I've transported plenty of these for customers over the years, and although I've never had the experience of driving one any distance, I too can't really see why they attract such high prices ? If they were maybe £1-2k, then fair enough as a simple, old, basic camper. But each to their own I suppose - I guess they must be easy to work on and simple mechanically.

Slow, thirsty and yes they don't handle (They were never meant to) Ive had a couple of them, the first a LHD when I was 17! The looks I got when the dog was sat in the drivers seat and I used to duck down to change the cassette
Had to light the gas rings in the winter to defrost the bloomin thing, wish I still had it now seeing the prices they are fetching.

They look cool sat on the drive as an ornament but that's about it. Horrid to drive though. The idea of my legs acting as the crumple zone is a little unappealing too.
Why people pay so much for these is a mystery to me as I can't see where the fun is with such an appalling contraption. But there again I despise Minis and Beetles too.

A long time friend bought a brand new T6 just 3 years ago as an everyday vehicle. First year did everything in it. Drove to and from work, went away with family and friends including me and it proved to be a comfortable, swift and enjoyable vehicle to own and drive.
Following 2 years it did very little. That’s an expensive shopping vehicle to have. Over 40k in fact. What does he crave? A 60’s split screen camper. Slow, unreliable and cramped. Not to mention the huge price tag over 30k. He is happy to admit that it’s purely down to nostalgia but I’m afraid I won’t be joining him on another trip to the Isle of Wight. Currently for sale is a Ford Capri 2.8i. £59,995. Is that nostalgia or obsession?

I had a 1962 one and later a 1968 one.
The first one was really nice to drive, but it was only my second car and only 1200 cc and I loved it. I lived in Cumberland and driving down narrow lanes in it was hilarious as people tried to drive up hedges and dykes to get through, even though the van was the same size as a Beetle. Rusted like a barsteward though. And it blew up on the M1 in Luton. Hired an 1800 and towed it back to Cumberland overnight with some funny looks from Mr Plod when we stopped in a service area and brewed up in the van. Replacement engine out of a Beetle and it was fine. Second one was 1600 cc. Oooh the Power! That one blew up on the M1 near Barnsley. Hired a brand new Allegro and towed it home, all went well until the final hill before home when I burnt the clutch on the tow car. One new cylinder and piston and off we went. Those were the days. I removed the engine and rebuilt it inside the van. I was young and impecunious. Now I'm old and impecunious and I really detest the "slamming" done to lots of T2s. To me they look broken. Mick |

I've owned my bay since 1996, I once drove it down to the South of France and this year we've done a tour around Scotland, up to the Isle of Mull, a couple of music festivals, VW shows & we'll still to do a week in Cornwall, and an overnighter in Brighton.
As you all say above, it is truly dire as a vehicle in which to cover long distances or even to camp in, my personal worst mpg was 13.6 mpg, but I wonder how many 75's will make it to tax & MOT exemption at forty years old. |

My other half wants one though. Never got one as I don't fancy fighting the corrosion though

The Citroen H van is up there with them!
the even do fake ones as little burger vans. I just read this about the H vans, I guess the VW's are in the same league! http://www.citroenhyonline.co.uk/buyers-guide.php
