Got me a new battery today with a lifetime guarantee.

Anyone heard of them?

Nope, the lifetime guarantee sounds interesting though!

Very interesting.

They don't appear to mention a lifetime warranty on their website:

seem to be a battery wholesaler (who also stock Bosch) that have been in business for a relatively decent amount of time.

Based upon the above, and their website, I would suggest a relabeled battery from another manufacturer, similar in style to Halfords own brand batteries.

I would check what the lifetime meant though. Lifetime of ownership of the car, lifetime of the original purchaser, or expected reasonable lifetime of a car battery (3-6 years?).

The limited bumph on their 'Conventional' and 'Conventional Plus' batteries suggest a change of label to distinguish between 3 and 5 year warranties (suggesting to me, the same battery with higher cost for the extra 2 years).

As long as it has a high enough CCA figure for your engine, it will be fine. I would also recommend charging it up at least overnight to be sure of its charged state prior to fitting it, especially during these lockdown situations. Doing short journeys on a new but partially charged battery (lost charge whilst on the shelf) will not do good for your confidence in it should it fail to turn over during its first year - it will likely be perfectly fine, just didnt get decent charges (from the alternator) to replenish the drain from starting for those short lockdown journeys.

My guess if you need a replacement in the warranty period they will do there best to wiggle out. I purchased something similar about 10 years ago for my classic car, it came with a 4 year warranty and after 40 months it was starting to struggle. The company said I would need to return it at my expense for it to be tested and if found to be faulty I would be refunded the postage and a replacement would be provided, the cost of shipping a battery with acid in it was nearly a third of what I had paid originally so I didnt bother.

I would like to know why the original battery that comes with a new car usually last 6 or 7 years but even the best quality replacement rarely does.

They certainly did, Sampson unlimited partnership guarantee which you registered the battery to your car, requiring a copy of the logbook to be submitted.

As long as you owned the car was the spiel, and indeed it was the case for me, a battery I bought in 1988 at a cost of £45 from Buist Bramall in Newcastle was replaced like for like with a new battery every four to five years or so up until the demise of Unipart retail car parts business in 2014.

I suspect if the annoyance of the manager at Partco in Newcastle was anything to go by, they were not expecting anyone to keep the same car for over 25 years
