Default silly question

probably seems a silly question but here goes - I have taken some photos of my boss's son. My boss is the British kart champion and his son looks like he may follow in his footsteps. i took 2 particular photos and one worked the other was blurred. Camera was in tv mode and shutter speed was 1-50, i was also using a 90-300 lens. Was one blured because of the distance to subject was slightly different in both shots, or because i moved - tripod not used in either
thanks

1/50 you would need a steady hand, especially if you were using at 300mm. When using tele-photo it can also magnify the hand shake. Could be out of focus, the type of blur can sometimes show which problem it is.

I could be wrong, but I think TV mode is set at lower shutter-speeds so you don't get cut-off pictures when photo'ing a TV. The sport setting or night setting (if there is one) may give you sharper shots.

General rule when using a telephoto lens is, the shutter speed should be equal to, or greater than the focal length of the lens to avoid camera shake, especially hand held!

Tv (Time Value) mode is also known as Shutter Priority, you set the shutter speed to obtain the creative effect you desire and the camera automatically sets the aperture to correctly expose the photograph.

The general rule of thumb is that the shutter speed should be equivalent to the focal length of the lens and on a crop camera the crop multiplier should be applied to avoid camera shake. Your 90-300 on your Canon crop camera should be used with a minimum shutter speed of 300 x 1.6 = 1/500 sec to ensure a good sharp photo when handheld.

Good technique, Image Stability and using additional support would all allow you to reduce the shutter speed. A good flash would allow you to increase the shutter speed if there is insufficient ambient light available.

I did not know that. My Olympus has S or SP instead, I asumed TV was a setting like sport or portrait modes (which I rarely use).
