Default re not going below Diesel 1/4 tank.

Morning,
I've read the suggestions about not dropping below the 1/4 tank level with the diesel but I just wanted to ask whether any potential pump damage can be done with continuous usage below that level or only if I inadvertently drop below 1/4 just once, would this lead to possible pump damage? Is this a design flaw that Rover knew of and does the low fuel level warning light come on well below this level?? Thanks for reading.

As far as I understand it it's a precaution not a rule and it only really applies to mk 1 diesels as the mk 2 doesn't have an under bonnet fuel pump.

When the under bonnet pump fails, if the car has less than a quarter of a tank in it, it will struggle to start.

Only some mk2's do not have the under bonnet pump. Many do have.

With everything working as it should you can go below the quarter tank level as often as you want.

If your in tank pump has failed then at around the quarter tank mark the UBP will start sucking air as the fuel level drops below the normally open vent valve on top of the ITP.

Of course if you never let the tank go below a quarter full then, unless you check the ITP, you won't know whether it is working or not.

If the under bonnet pump fails, the car won't start at all, no matter how much fuel is in the tank.

I collected data on this with the cars I've seen and worked on - seems to be about 15% of Mk2s have both, and 85% only have the one.

The later system was fitted to my 04 plate 75 Tourer, so the changeover was quite early into Mk2 territory.
Some will have been late registered, hence the few 54s out there with the early system.

Every day is a school day, thanks! None of the facelifts I've had had one. I don't do derv now so it won't affect me in the future but it's always good to learn

I can only get around £40/30L of diesel between red light coming on and fuel station pump shut off, even if I fill the last bit slowly after the first shut off (around 1litre). Any clues - bent float? Consequently, I regularly let the red light come on before looking for a fillup, as there must still be several gallons left in the tank.
