Just been Offered one now from a mate In Stoke.
Its in good nick and but does need a bit of engine work, she fires and drives but is hunting a bit which could be simple as a faulty dizzy or Cabberottr needs adjusting.

What do you think of these cars?

if I get it at a good price I can fix it and sell it for more cash like a welsh version of Wheeler dealers.
ran several as taxis in 70s/80,s . much more reliable than cortinas at that time , hunting may be down to carb diapraghm, really reliable , pal has one in our classic car club and does auto jumble with it , engine to bell are all through bolts as are startermotor bolts , tedious to remove

Default anyone owned a hillman hunter before?

Takes me back! Good to start with, covered a high mileage here and on continent. Exhaust valves burned out (easy enough) cam chain stretched and idler wore out (not so easy) clutch was an easy job, carb diaphragm went and had regular problems centralizing carb needle. Gave up when the servo became 'irregular' with brake failure and the bodywork began to wash away. It was good for its time but I would not relish driving one again for any distance.

In the 70s my old mam had a sky blue 1725 gt???? gts??? I forget which.
He worked for a national sales company and despite all his personal sales prizes, one of his kick back prizes was a v8 engine transplant in the Company car Hunter. Those were the good old MAD days (wolf of wall street)Dad had used to be a Hendon college Police driving instructor, and privately a Stock Car driver. I remember him saying it was over powered and bonkers. But I can know hear it again ,Id almost forgotten about it

Hilman Hunter, I think £700 to £800.

I had one some years ago

Also owned the full size versions of a Hillman Minx 1500 and a Humber Sceptre 1725 Twin carb. Loved them both.

One of the Rootes group I wouldn't mind is the Sunbeam Rapier fastback.

Never had a Hunter but did have an Avenger for quite a few years. It was my first daily driver and I passed it on to a family member as a freebie when I replaced it ... I still have a new sill somewhere in the garage for it.

Back then I used to hanker after a Lotus Sunbeam, I think my interest might have been sparked by Petula Clark who I remember fronting a TV advert for the standard model.

Absolutely right - driven by Andrew Cowan - a fairly well known Scottish rally driver of the day. He was followed home into second place by the legendary Paddy Hopkirk ........................... in an Austin 1800 (aka the landcrab)
