Default sun roof operation

I have arrived at dealing with the sun roof on my restoration project 53 reg Con Estate. It wasn't working at all until I reconnected the electrics that had been unplugged by a previous owner. The motor runs in both directs but in one direction it pushes the glass forward and up at the front so scooping in air, in the other direction it opens a few inches and stop! That's not what other sun roofs I have owned on other cars have done but is this NORMAL for a R75? If not how IS it supposed to work?

That sounds like the 'tilt' mode, but back to front! The rear of the glass should lift a few inches so that air is drawn out of the car interior.
Alternatively, it could be that the closing sequence is not being fully completed. When closed, the glass panel is flush with the roof. When opened it lowers in order to slide backwards into the cartridge below the roof line. Imagine that movement in reverse, to close the roof.

Have you cleaned the visible mechanics and checked for obstructions? Also make sure that your battery is fully charged.

Your owner's handbook should explain what to expect with the various positions of the switch.

Thanks Simon,
I was trying to make sure how it was supposed to work before delving further. No handbook with the car and Haynes doesn't say how it actually works. Now, thanks to you, I know that it should work like a conventional sun roof will investigate further (I know that I have the drains to do!)

As said, pressing the sunroof button activates tilt, which should just lift the rear of the glass. i have recently worked on mine and i couldnt see how any electrics could be reversed, as I think the plug can only go in one way, but I may be wrong. There is a way to reset the operation which i believe is to hold the button forward for 5 secs or so but I have never tried this. good luck
