So with that.. that means that the thermostat is faulty then really?

Yes; I really can't think what else can cause a running temperature 10 degrees below the norm.

You might be reassured to know that my urban runabout has just had the same syndrome. The thermostat was about two years old and when tested in a pan of water it was opening in the early eighties (Citroën spec. 89 degrees) and the temperature varied with road speed as yours does.

I'd recommend that you buy an MG Rover branded 'stat from places like Rimmer Bros. or E Car Parts at Sandy (X-Part agent). If you can find one with the extra supporting legs so much the better.
