I found the same, when driving locally around town and the local dual carriageways I was always getting the low 20's. Long runs on motorways got it to the late 20's at best. Thought it may be due to the gearing on the 190 as it revs higher than the 160.

I still found it a bit better on fuel than my v6 auto. If stuck in stop start traffic I could see the fuel gauge moving down.

Around 300 miles a tank at best in both of them.

Was the reason why I went back to a diesel. If the fuel consumption wasn't so heavy then I would have kept that tourer, miss the power of that one, had so much overtaking power.

I previously owned a R75 2.5 v6 Auto for 6 years during which I did about 22000 miles (55k when I bought it, about 77k when I sold it).

Not daily. Mostly holidays and weekends, so a mix of (often very) short trips and long (100s of miles) trips

Overall MPG during my ownership: 28
Best: 36.5 Achieved twice (steady trip Essex to Liverpool, and another from Yorkshire to Essex)
Worst: 20

All fill-ups and calculations brim to brim

Current R75 2.5 v6 Auto
Owned for just over a year and only done about 1300 miles, mostly short runs (due to lockdown), so not really representative

Overall: 15 !
Best: 26 (to/at/from holiday in Norfolk - when holidays were allowed!)
Worst: 13.7 !!

But as others have said, you don't buy a v6 Auto for its economy

From 2012 to 2015 I had a R75 1.8 Turbo Manual which was a daily (40 miles round trip commute) and did 35,000 miles in my ownership. Sold it at 118k miles

Overall: 34,6 MPG
Best: 42.1 (Essex to Liverpool)
Worst: 29.7

Always brim to brim

I really don't think it is Rob for a six cylinder petrol engine. The results that have been quoted don't seem unreasonable to me. As SideValve rightly points out, consumption will be higher in the winter for a variety of reasons.

Mine says 21mpg and has done for the past 3 years or so.

Takes 15 minutes to get to work along narrow betractored lanes, only exceeding 50mph for a couple of minutes.

Best I got out of it was 35mpg when driving from Bristol to SW Cornwall.

Maybe "thirsty" was a little unfair to the 'ol girl but driving like a saint I was hoping it would be a little better than 21mpg I suppose but it's not too much of a problem only working a short distance from home.

So do my figures seem about right then around 300 given the town to town driving I mostly do?.

From my workings out brim to brim using 58 litres of fuel almost exactly, given the conditions and size of the car.. and the fact the car hasn't covered many miles since it's last mot last may, regular use may improve the mpg slightly.

If you're continually doing 7 mile journeys in cold, wintery conditions then it's not too surprising for a big engine. One thought is that when your windows are covered with ice, do you let the engine idle from cold whilst you scrape it off (this practice decreases mpg)?

Following your thermostat work I would also monitor the coolant temperature to make sure it's reaching the low nineties on your 7 mile drive.

Hi Rick. Totally understand anyone on long commutes wanting better fuel consumption and you were crystal clear on that when I was asking questions before buying (which I much appreciated). I noticed the gearing seemed low, especially compared to the V8. That probably does explain the good overtaking power. I reverse out of a steep drive through pillars on a bend and the reverse is also low geared which is great. A lot of cars seem to have silly high reverse gears so you have to slip the clutch to reverse safely but I can fully engage the V6 drive and crawl around the obstacle course quite nicely. Just had a full engine flush and oil/filter change with magnetic sump plug fitted while getting the front anti-roll bushes done and she's running really well. (PS..Managed to fix the front windscreen demist with your tips, so again much appreciated)

when I was working more, my 190 manual was my semi-daily driver and this was mainly short runs to the station and the odd longer run so would get about mid 20s to the gallon. I knew if I'd done around 300 miles it was time to fill up.

On a longer run with mostly motorway I know it will do about low 30 to the gallon, and the last long run I did was about 360 miles and did that on a full tank with a bit to spare.

My other semi-daily driver is a 2-litre auto Volvo 740 and that I think is actually worse around town than my 2.5L V6.

I find that winter knocks about 3/4 mpg off, whatever type of journey you are doing. However, I do find that my current V6s which are both 2.5 autos are better on fuel than my previous 2.0 V6 auto was.

Over the 7 months best average was 33.18 mpg
Worst was 21.74 mpg.
I always brim the tank and record the mileage every fill up.
I do the same and log it all on an excel spreadsheet (gives me something to do ).
I logged my Cowley V6 2.5 litre manual over 2 years and I got

Total miles 13,485
Total gallons 493.22
Average MPG 27.34

Not far off yours.
