Default V6 engine rattle, strange?

Hi folks,

Since we bought our 75 theres been a strange metallic rattle From around the aux belt area (confirmed by removing the aux belt). New tensioner and idler pulleys fitted along with new belt.

Symptoms:

Startup from cold and have a metallic rattle from around the driver's side wheel arch area that quickly goes within say 20-30 seconds. Slightly revving the engine causes the rattle to increase in speed.

No issue with turning the air con on or off appears to make no difference.

Could this rattle be a cause for concern? I don't believe it's anything related to the upper inlet manifold

No alternator light on and no issues with the steering fluid level either.

Thanks
Rob

So, if you've run the engine with the aux belt off & the noise disappears, that eliminates everything that is driven by that belt.

This leaves the crankshaft pulley (common to rattle on diesels but I've only ever had one on a KV6) or something in behind the timing covers such as water pump, tensioner or idler pulleys.

Spray some water or similar on the crankshaft pulley when you start up from cold & see if the noise changes or disappears.

Thanks for the reply! Much appreciated. I will try dropping some water on the crank pulley and then starting up.

Having done a quick YouTube search, wish I had searched YouTube earlier!

It sounds exactly like this below when cold and goes away after 20-30 seconds.

Thanks

If that's the sound then I would put my money on the crank pulley.

The one I changed on a KV6 sounded much worse than that.

It does sound pretty much exactly the same as the video, worse when started from cold and quickly go away, no rattle with the aux belt removed so.. yeah your right I'd say it's the crank pulley too. If it is, it's understandable as I believe it's the original rover fitted pulley and is 18 years old .

Thanks for your help and advice!

Hopefully a quick fix for you with a replacement pulley.

We're all here to help each other so you're very welcome.

Please do update on here though if & when you fix or get it fixed.

Good luck with this.
