On this day 106 years ago
Today is the anniversary of 'In Flanders Fields’ poem
106 years ago today, Canadian military doctor and artillery commander, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote possibly the most famous piece of literature of World War One. His words led to the creation of remembrance poppies which are now an international symbol of remembrance around the world including the: United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and many other countries; due to the reference to poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers. In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scare heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields. Take up your quarrel with the foe: To you with failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold high. If Ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, Though Poppies grow In Flanders Field. *****Copied from another site
