Angry Help please, Heater/thermostat problem

2001 75 Conny tourer 2.0v6.

I first noticed about a couple of months ago the heater wasn't operating properly.
I started when my wife said she felt cold (she always feels cold) so I kinda dismissed it. Then after a few complaints I checked and sure enough the passenger side was blowing cold air.
Drivers side was fine so I thought it to be an electrical issue with the heating system.
Then the drivers side got cold! I also noticed when driving at speed the gauge needle went down a bit, so I linked it to the thermostat.
Now I noticed the drivers rear footwell is filling with water.
There is no leak from the system as I still see water in the expansion tank.
Are these all linked or could the water ingress be a separate issue?
Is it as I suspect the thermostat or the sensor?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Cliff
Oh and Happy new year to one and all.

If the passenger side started to lose heat first and then the driver's side some time later, you more than likely have a clogged heater matrix.
The driver's side is the side with the quick flow in and out of the matrix, whereas the flow on the passenger side is slower. Any sludge or silt in the coolant will therefore settle on the passenger side.

The water ingress issue will be unrelated, although in a V6 the temperature should always hold 9 o'clock. If it's dropping below this, the temperature is below 75 degrees (74 is when the dial creeps below 9 o'clock).
The V6s usually run in the 90s.

As above.

The matrix will be blocked and.coupled with a lazy stat would not have helped.

Have you got a sunroof by any chance?

Heating will almost certainly be a blocked heater matrix. A free of to do, just allow half a day or so

We footwell probably something else, could be a blocked plenum drain?
It will be even wetter once you've got the marix out to flush it

More likely the water is getting in from the rear end rather than the front. There are dozens of threads on where rain gets into the boot/rear foot well, so worth a search.

I would say that you're spot-on there Cliff. The condition of the heater matrix wouldn't cause the temperature gauge to fall.

Default Heater thermostat problem

Thanks for the help guys, sorry I haven't replied sooner as I've been unwell.
To answer one question, there is no sunroof I would have looked to that straight away regarding water ingress.
Clogged heater matrix is intriguing, would I have to remove it, or can I flush it out some way?
I need to change the coolant anyway, with the thermostat do you have to buy the kit with the housing or is it possible to just change the stat?
Cheers Cliff

Cliff,

Since you saw the temperature gauge falling, I would recommend that you find out what the coolant temperature is using the instrument pack diagnostics (see 'How to...' section for instructions). It should be in the nineties. If it's cooler, your thermostat isn't closing properly.

You have to buy the housing which has the thermostat sealed within it.

Default Thermostat check

Thanks Simon,

Do I need a T4 diagnostic to find out water temp? How do I go about checking that?
I probably should have a full diagnostic done is there anyone near me with one?
I'm gonna check me plenum a tomorrow if it isn't chucking it down.
If I did have a blockage in the heater matrix as well, do I have to remove half the dash to get to it, or can it be flushed through?

Cheers
Cliff
