Leak at fuel burning heater

My dad noticed the car (75 CDT Tourer) was low on water and found there had been water dripping onto the bell housing - seemed to lose a good bit initially but loss seems to have tempered quite a bit now and he isn't having to top up a lot. Had a closer look at the leak appears to be coming from the fuel burning heater assembly. See pics below:



You can see dry white gunge in the red areas of both pics, but notice the actual wet spot in the circle on the left hand pic. Assume this is part of the cooling for the FBH, and that part looks like perhaps some sort of thermostat housing for the unit...? Is there anything that can be done to fix this or is the part integral to the fbh unit and therefore require the whole thing to be replaced? I know they're expensive or hard to get hold of second hand so in the event this can't be fixed is it possible to remove it for good...? Tips appreciated as always

Hi,

That looks like a leaking water pump, the good news is I don't think it will be too serious.
I am slowly overhauling mine, bought S/h. You can follow Harry's "how to" on this forum, it shows the pump dismantled. I am actually trying to find a replacement "O" ring, approx 46mm diam, by 1.5mm thick if I remember right for my own.

It is the FBH's own electic water pump. If the seal has gone it should fairly easy to resolve, if its the casing slightly more difficult, but you should be able to get a good second hand one.

I would suggest finding a way to link the two coolant pipes (with copper ?), then you will have the entire summer to sort it out and maybe give a service.

Found this while searching for my own problem... I have a leak in exactly the same place. I've looked on Rimmer Bros and I can't seem to find a seal for the electric water pump. Is it just a standard part I can get somewhere else? If not, is there a way I can re-route the pipes to cut out the FBH altogether (I'm fairly sure it doesn't work anyway)?

You will not find the OEM part anywhere, but from a Webasto parts source.

Likely it will be a standard part, which if you measured it accurately for both diameters, you should be able to get from a specialist bearings and seals supplier.
