Bonnet and boot struts always work with less effect in extreme cold weather.
If you work the bonnet up and down briskly a few times you will find in most cases they will hold better.
At the end of day replacement is the answer but at a cost sometimes. Two very short ones for the boot of my SL have just cost me £80.

There’s sometimes a different pressure on the same length for example the Rover SD1 tailgate with Vitesse spoiler required different struts.
I know of someone who fitted Vitesse struts to a regular model and the tailgate shot up way too fast.

Unhappy

But... there's always a but... it looks now that both my SGS bonnet & tailgate gas strut kits have been lost by La Poste somewhere in Roissy airport (thus French mistake... Coronavirus disorder??).
SGS answer has been very fair:
"I apologize that you have still have not received your order.
I have arranged for your items to be dispatched again. Hopefully, these will arrive with you as we do want you to receive your order.
Apologies again for the inconvenience."
Fine service! Hats off!
Hence I'm avidly waiting...

Ooohh frustrating! Still, it's good to know that SGS are being helpful in their response.

Fingers crossed they arrive soon.

Decided to bite the bullet this afternoon, after taking the dog to the park for a walk, and when we got back to the car an hour later, I opened the boot, pushed it up in the air, reached into the boot to get the towel to wipe the dogs feet, and suddenly a sharp pain on my shoulders told me the boot lid had come down just missing the back of my neck. So when I got back home, I ordered two sets of struts, one for the bonnet, and one for the boot lid that tried to break my neck.

Guess what?!
The first bunch of struts has just arrived home at noon today after a 3 weeks journey and a fortnight vagrancy around Paris-Roissy airport!

I would everybody here to know how helpful, reliable, fair & obliging Cara Trevey & SGS were in that matter.

But as very nicely they've sent me a second similar parcel, I feel very confused now.
As you may guess, I don't intend to keep what I haven't paid for and as a consequence isn't mine.
On the other hand you may understand as well I can't send them back the second parcel - when it arrives - at my own expense.
Hence I've just sent them an E-Mail and asked what they are waiting me to do.

Default Easy job .. massive improvement!

Fitted a pair of new struts to both bonnet and boot on my saloon today. Like many have said a massive improvement opening, staying open and closing now.

A shout out to SGS as well. Ordered online midday, an email received from Abigale at SGS an hour later just to check I had ordered the right ones by asking for the part numbers on my car, and both new pairs delivered the next day. Excellent service.

A fifteen minute job to remove old and fit new ones. Isn't it great when all goes to plan!

My car doesn't look as clean as yours Cliff, but my struts are as good!

Happy Roving

John

Just waiting on my bonnet struts (and battery cover) to arrive from dmgrs, my struts hold up the bonnet ...until a midgie farts nearby...and then the bonnet Will shut very gently. So hopefully new struts will at least raise the ‘resistance to wind level’, to at least my dug farting
