Swallowtail 1/8000sec f5.5 ISO1600 a fast mover, hence fast shutter.

Monitor Lizard basking in the sun just outside the front door of the house this afternoon. Head to tail, about 24 inches. Seemed friendly

Good shots Phil.

You have given me the idea of trying high ISO and high shutter speed on my camera. I started shooting macro a few years back using that method but only on really sunny days did it work well. Then I started using flash, which works really well but has the downside of waiting for the flash to recharge and it can look unnatural. The high ISO performance in modern cameras has improved and I have better gear now so I will revisit the original method.

Just need the rain to stop and the clouds to clear.

Thanks Paul

The butterfly was in constant flutter and would not keep still even for a second. I took 20 of those photos at 1/8000sec and the ISO was set to auto, which came out at 1600. In post edit, the photo was dark, so I had to push up the exposure and twiddle around with the black point, white, black, saturation, contrast and brightness, then noise reduction. The shutter speed: next time, I will try 1/4000 sec for the fast moving subject. There is no TV or radio here, so it gives me something to do and it’s fun.

Thanks for the info Phil. I went out and tried shooting for insects without flash.

I tried shutter speeds of 1/8000, 1/4000 and 1/2000 sec

I tried apertures from f8 to f11

The ISO I set to auto.

It was hard to get a shot I was really happy with so the flash will be going back on the camera Gave me something to try out this afternoon and I quite enjoy fiddling about and testing different settings.

The Tamarind Tree

What can’t be seen is the Indian Ocean behind the hedge, just out of sight. We had lunch there yesterday at a friends house. They had a lovely garden of 88 acres which is part coral reef and has bat caves in the grounds, the ruins of a mosque with tombs and a cemetery. When they cleared away the vegetation around the plot, they came across skeletons in the decaying tombs.

The Beach Boys keep away from the property because of superstition.

The tree could have come out of one of Grimm's Fairy Tales.

Amazing pictures Phil, often wondered what a mature Tamarind tree looked like the fruit/seeds are widely used in cooking and making paste a Filipino favourite ingredient for sinigang

Thanks Gordon, the branches had moss growing in them and the weight of the moss gave the branches that funny shape. I had not seen a Tamarind Tree before
