whilst what you say may be correct for a 3 pin plug and socket, change the plug and socket to a different type and you can run a bigger compressor

My apologies I should of been clearer, that's why I said a standard 13 amp socket (3 pin plug type), if you change to 3 phase it's a different kettle of fish, also I was unaware that you can install a different plug and socket arrangement, as I thought it was illegal to break into the ring main unless you are a fully qualified sparky. I was saying that that is the largest you can go without making any adaptions to the wiring.

If you have a 'commando' style of plug/socket arrangement (the blue round ones), then they have a capacity of 16amp, but these aren't fused, so they should be on a dedicated circuit with breaker to suit. Not normally used in domestic setups.

You can run twin 3hp as long as it has delayed sequential starting (if you try to start both at the same time, you'll trip the breaker)
