Tyre pressure and temperature

Hi,

When should I check my tyres pressure?

Does the temperature make any difference? For instance if I think my tyres look a little flat, head off to the garage about 5km away to check them, would l get a false reading because they have warmed up?

Buy a digital tester for a tenner and check yourself.

I doubt you find a big difference

Yes, rising ambient temperatures and especially the sun's radiant heat does effect tyre pressure. I've checked my tyre pressure in the cool summer mornings, and again in the HOT afternoon, I've had upto 5psi difference.

Tyre pressures are given as cold inflation readings, so its best to check tyre pressure before you drive too far, not to warm the air in the tyres (air is a gas, gas expands once warmed up).

As FrenchMike suggested, get yourself a digital tyre gauge, £3 to £6 on ebay.

Always told buy my dad many moons ago when I first started driving.

Check tyres, oil and coolant weekly. (old cars back then, weekly essential

)

And always with cold tyres and cold engine. Still do it to this day. Dad's always know best

Got a cheapy digital meter and an even cheaper mini compressor.

For some reason my tyres always look under inflated but when I check the pressure is pretty good.

When I had my tyres fitted the fitter advised me to keep them at 35psi all round, saying the 32/30 for the diesel was too soft.

I just put 34 all round in mine and it drives very smooth and precise with less rattles
