So after a run car not heating up bottom of the radiator is cold is that thermostat or airlock (diesel)

If the thermostat was not opening, causing the bottom radiator hose to remain cold, the engine would get hotter. It would also be a very unusual mode of failure on a diesel cooling system.

If you're losing coolant or have had work done on the car requiring draining of the coolant, then you may have an air lock if it wasn't bled properly. Alternatively the radiator may be blocked.

What does the temperature gauge show?

Sounds like the typical diesel cold feet problem due to thermostat deterioration (early opening/over-cooling). If so, most people fix it by doing the in-line thermostat modification. There's literally hours of reading on this and one or two HowTos around.

When you say the "car" do you mean the heater isn't performing then?

Here's the MGR procedure for the diesel engine.
