That's really up to you. You will almost certainly find that the high speed brush (purple wire) is hardly worn at all because it should never come into use. You could leave that one and keep its replacement in stock as insurance for the future! You don't need to make a decision until you've opened the motor and assessed what needs doing.

Phil; just to explain Mike's comment here. Because he lives abroad he (quite rightly) is annoyed at ECP's policy of charging more than the actual cost of overseas postage. The inclusive price to us in the UK, about £21 I believe, in my view represents a very cheap repair. It will be long-lasting too since their brushes are high quality and durable (mine have been in service now for ten years).

True Simon, indeed my first repair was soldered in place and still works, but then a few miles down the road I noted Stocktake’s comment about his Gascat (https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...=111790&page=4).

I believe FrenchMike also recommended crimping, so now that is what I do rather than relying on my, what Dave would call, a Mickey Mouse soldering iron.

Hi,

Got the fan and shroud off fairly easily.

Buoyed by my success, skipped into the garage to fit the new brushes, tripped over (a*se over t*t), dropped the fan and broke one of the magnets inside!!!!

I've put a wanted add in the correct section.

Any of you guys know where I could get a replacement fan and control box?

How serious is the breakage Phil? I ask because I fractured one of my magnets by being slightly too enthusiastic with my vice (they are very brittle). I was advised that the motor was not a write-off and would still work perfectly well, and it did!

It looks like one of the magnets has cracked and a large part of it has broken loose and is fouling the motor.

I assumed it is not repairable?

Hi All,

Problem sorted, I think.

Replaced the fan with a new 2 speed.

Fitted Jules' updated resistor (great service from Jules delivered next day).

Done about 100 miles since, no coolant loss and temperature running between 93 and 98.
Occasionally jumps to 100 In slow traffic but fan cuts in and brings it down.

Does that temp range seem ok??

Thanks Dave and Kaiser.

I'm not sure there was any gunk in the system, the cooling fluid was changed a few months ago when I got the car, the old stuff looked very clear and fresh.

I am assuming that it was overheating because the fan was us. Over a space of time it was probably venting and losing a little fluid each time.

With the decent weather I was not using the air con or demist much which meant the fan was hardly ever available.

On the fateful warm evening, I was up and down the steep hills several times, the coolant was getting lower and lower until I got the overheat warning.

That's the only explanation my fuddled mind can come up with.

Fingers crossed it will be ok now, but I'll obviously keep a more regular eye on fluid levels.
