A heatwave shouldn't make any difference to running temperature other than the engine reaching it in a shorter time. If it was my car I would be removing the thermostat and checking its operation in a pan of water with a thermometer in it.

the P.O. had a lot of work done before I bought it, head skim and gasket so looks like it did overheat at some point. it also had a new water pump/thermostat housing and cooling flush. all done by a Rover specialist with laminated bills to prove !!!!!!
