Welcome along.....

I'd start with the fuel filter clip.....
then crank sensor
then cam sensor

have a search there's plenty on all 3 subjects

Welcome also . Because your car is V reg , it's probably not the fuel filter in the tank . Earlier models up to 2001 apparently had a filter module in the tank which clipped together rather than screwed together and they are not known to fail (unless anyone has found differently ? ) . Agree with Greeners that the cam sensor and crankshaft sensor are likely culprits.

Cam sensor doesn't stop an engine, only prevents starting. At least mine didn't.

OTOH crank sensor is entirely possible, although the puff of smoke is wierd.

A fault code read would probably help.

Are there any other signs and symptoms? Is the coolant level correct? Do you need to top up often? Is the car serviced at least annually? Has it had the cam belts renewed in recent times? What speed was the car doing when the white smoke occured? If you can get it to an ex MGR depot, a session on a T4 will give a idea what's wrong.

Agreed, but as it now doesn't start I'd add it to the list to check.
