Gearbox oil change
I managed to do nothing on the R40 NUK today, but i did do a gearbox oil change on the FL2 adding some lovely new golden syrup oil.
First i jacked up the front and sat it on some wooden plates so it was high enough for me to remove the undertray. My drive slopes a little so jacking the front up to the required amount make it level Jacked up to make it level back to front and side to side. 1 Wheel off check that i could undo the level plug. 2 Crack & undo the drain plug 24mm spanner. 3 Once drain plug cracked i remove the plug with my hand, it gives you more control over the flow. 4 5 The oil comes out very quick & soon slows down to a dribble. 6 Old oil dark brown 7 Clean and refit the drain plug. 8 Remove the filler plug 9 Make sure the car is level 10 Hook up my filling pump container. 11 Pump away until i have 1.900ltr in the gearbox this is the second part 900ml 12 Gearbox full as its dribbling out of the level plug. 13 14 Filler plug back in and wipe clean. 15 Road wheel back on lower the car and take it for a run, check it when i got back all ok undertray back on job done. This is the old oil and new golden syrup oil next to each other. 16 17 It certainly needed doing even though Landrover say its sealed for life yer right, next to do is the Haldex filter.

I always notice that everything seems to run nice and smooth when you have done something like this. Placebo effect or true? But it gives you satisfaction that you have done something ‘good’.

What I didn't do was attend to the clear sort of varnish coat that was starting to peel off one of my 2 year old headlight lenses.
( Not that I know what I can do about it or what type of varnish it is.-- ) Help on that varnish, anybody ??? Last edited by COLVERT; 19th October 2020 at 20:47.. |

Took the wheels and rear drums off the wife's Polo to check the condition of the "sef-adjusting" handbrake that wasn't! They seem to get full of rust dust which stops the shoes expanding fully to activate the self adjust mechanism. Rust dust cleaned out and one helpful "click" on each adjuster and all is well again. Apart from those drum retaining screws with the silly heads made of cheese. Despite not being overtightened and being smeared with coppaslip, they still stick and have to be persuaded to release (centre punch at an angle). New ones on order (proper stainless jobbies with a proper allen key head) and the old ones have a normal screwdriver slot cut in as a temporary fix!

What I didn't do was get the damn thing to start! Grrr. She tuns over but won't fire up. Anybody with any suggestions what to kick, I'll be grateful. Thinking fuel filter, UB pump first, cam sensor. She's a manual diesel CDT.

Give the underbonnet pump a few taps while it is running, see if the tone changes

Car would not start
Been out shopping this morning. Jumped in car to go home. Nothing turned key lights came on dash but not a thing from the engine. Battery and fuel were ok. As I had no idea what was up. Rang Brian within 2 minutes he knew what was up. Moved the wire to the starter and she came to life.
