From what you are saying the situation is quite serious.

To manufacture carbon monoxide the gas has to be burning. There are a couple of ways this can happen. The main burner and the pilot light both produce this deadly gas.
The amount from the pilot light would be very small and not normally cause any problems. However, from your description, much more carbon monoxide is being produced.
Lots of gas appliances have a viewing window to see if the main burner is alight.

When you say the boiler is OFF are you sure it is completely shut down ??
ie. Producing no heat at all.

If the gas valve is not shut right down there could be a small seepage of gas to the main burner which will burn with a very low flame.

Normally the system above the main burner is self purging. The amount of heat produced will make CO produced go straight up and out of the vent.

However, if the main burner is only just alight with a very small flame there might not be a sufficient convection current to clear the CO gas. The gas being heavier than air will come out of the bottom of the boiler and into the room.--

Further to the post above . Lol.

Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas which when breathed in stops the red blood cells from carrying oxygen.--The person affect slowly suffocates.

If the person affected is sleeping the usual result is that they just don't ever wake up again.--

Mild effects are sickness and headaches with, sometimes, a bit of memory loss. Even getting a person out into the fresh air doesn't help as their red blood cells are not working. Serious cases need a blood transfusion.

Sorry to go on a bit but what you said in your post is a bit worrying.

To be honest I've been smelling it on & off for months but this last month has been really bad.
I'm wondering if the flu pipe in the chimney is blocked or collapsed.
The gas service engineer is coming out tomorrow.

Yes getting headaches & an horrible gas fume taste on the back of your throat. yet the CO2 monitors aren't registering anything

No different houses Colvert.

It is a lovely day here in Nairobi, not a cloud in the sky, bright sunshine and 26C is forecast. I had the renewal insurance premiums in by email for the Rover 75 and the 4x4. Different countries, but both due in 2 weeks time. Not very good planning on my part: at the same time and just after Christmas, but it is what it is and I shouldn’t complain.

Good luck with your house and the smells. One thing I won’t miss from the house in London is the mice!

Yes she cant wait to come home, The doctor said her blood pressure was only slightly high when she stood up but apart from that she was good in herself.

As others have said, I would be banging on doors and ringing bells to get your house looked at to find the cause of the smell you are experiencing. I wouldn't rest until the issue has been resolved!

Talking of mice, we have a lovely little Pud Tat at the rescue at the moment who was practicing sharpening her teeth and claws on my hand. She will make a great mouser

Yes tomorrow will hopefully get to the bottom of it, just this minute been thinking about the chimney! we share back to back chimneys with next door in these old houses. I wonder if something is amiss there!

I've mentioned the fumes to the nextdoor neighbours but they said they cant bmell anything.

Great picture of 'Bitey'

aaargh - woken from a decent lie in at 8.04am this morning by a thunderous knocking on the door!
A rather dishevelled man announced that he was here as arranged to seal up my manhole - the one in the garage that is.
Apparently, water from some sort of underground stream is leaking into the sewerage system somewhere on the road so Northumbrian Water Authority have decided the easiest answer is to seal the inside of all the inspection chambers and connecting pipework.
My concern now is whether or not I dare flush the loo while this guy is up to his neck in the manhole ???!!!

We've had a very expensive weekend - the washing machine packed in yesterday, so that's a new one needed; then this morning, SWMBO put the slow cooker on to sort tonight's meal - and discovered a crack in the bowl - so a new one of them too

Can’t you get a combined slow cooker / washing machine, that would save a few quid?!?

Excellent idea Andy - bit worried the meat juices from the slow cooker may leak into the washing though - perhaps I could use some Hylomar gasket cement (can you still buy it?)

Great idea, spin cycle to peel the potatoes before starting the cooking.

Well, diet is going ok, lost nearly 6 kilos, not far off a stone, nearly half what I was recommended to lose. Still hungry but must be getting used to eating less, dog's chews not looking so appetising now. Basically cut out eating cr@p and sweet stuff and generally eating less.

Can't help laughing at Maya, she's a strange looking thing after her haircut. She's got a Shih Tzu's head and hairy tail but the body and legs of a Pug! She's only 9 months old and she's bigger than Suzy and Pops who are 6 and 3 years old. She's still as sweet and barmy though.

Well done Steve, that’s a great start to the weight loss, now the festivities are out of the way you should find it a bit easier.

I wish I had your will power. But congratulations on the weight loss.
