soldering help needed
Hi
I am trying to rescue a tv for my elderly neighbour that he attempted to repair due to not being able to afford a replacement, I have replaced some capacitors which had blown but he also has managed to dislodge a small connector on a circuit board which is beyond my very basic soldering skills. So is there anyone who could help out I would obviously cover postage costs and any expenses Andy |

Hi, could you give more details, possibly supply a pic of the damaged part?

Hi, its a little plastic housing so you can plug in a wire feed for the circuit board, I'll post a photo once I get home tonight
Thanks andy |

Hi.
The best solution is to try and find a local TV engineer if you can. One thing though is dependant on the engineer, once seen its been "got at" he may refuse the job. The internet has killed off the vast majorities of the highly skilled people from the trade, changing capacitors with a poker is hardly skilled. Leave it to the professionals is my advice.

hi this is a picture (fingers crossed it worked) of the connector needing soldering back on. I have never professed to be skilled but neither did i use a poker to change the capacitors ( which i repaired on my own tv a year ago and still going strong) however I know my own limitations which is why I asked if there was anyone able to help out. As previously stated I am just trying to help out an elderly but very proud neighbour who is on a very limited income |

Hi.
Accept my apologies for being obtuse last night. The reasons though I said it is because my business gradually declined due to cheap imports, people coming in and demanding any repair was never to be more than £15. Then the internet came along and started selling capacitor kits and customers told me that was the fault! I mean to say 40 years in the trade and fully qualified. It wasn't as if we ever ripped anyone off, all I wanted was to feed my weans and pay the mortgage. I would say to anyone having a go to fix their TV, think carefully about the safety aspect, a drop of solder in the wrong place, an incorrect screw fitted in the psu could easily lead to a live chassis with hdmi scarf or aerial sockets at mains potential. Just like the traders here I guaranteed my work for 12 months, simply because I used the best components, if it was capacitors I used Panasonic 130 degree types. So I'm sorry for original comment but perhaps you might understand why I said it. |
