Default To tip or not to tip.

G/Daughter came home from uni today, where she is studying Psychology.
Showed me some results of some surveys that have been done.
One was about tipping in Restaurants, if the waiter or waitress touches your hand, you would normally give a bigger tip than you would, if they touched your shoulder.
What I have concluded from that is, when you are giving your order, you should keep your hands in your pockets.

Don't ever remember being touched on the hand by a member of staff. I would feel pretty uncomfortable if they did.
Possibly an American thing, obsessed with tipping over there.

Perhaps the thing to do is to shove ones hands down ones pants. Then there will very rarely be a need to give a tip.

I think tipping should be optional based upon good service.

We were in a restaurant in Paddington London earlier this week - not only was a 12.5% service charge added to the bill (not mentioned on the priced menus on the tables) but when you went to pay by card they then expected you to add a "gratuity" on top of this !

Maybe I'm old fashioned but I think that's pushing the tipping ethos a bit too far !

Don't you run into whole another slew of problems if you keep your hands in your pockets when the waitress approaches? haha

We went for a meal out a couple of weeks ago, a rare treat these days and sadly it was very disappointing. Bad service, a very long wait for the food to arrive and the portion size was so small I thought we had ordered the childs portion by mistake. Finally the waitress was so miserable I thought somebody had died.

She gave us the bill at the end and I said how disappointed we were with the meal and she said ''no tip then?'' I said it might have helped if you had smiled and she just said ''why?''

There are places that seem to add the ''tip'' onto the bill. I refuse to go these establishments as I feel as has been said a tip is given for good service and as a thankyou.

You are just asking to be touched.

Bit different over there as people working in bars & restaurants generally aren't paid anywhere near enough to live on, so tips are effectively part of their basic pay. That's how it's been for decades. It's a shoddy system where working very long hours for the minimum wage simply isn't enough to feed, clothe and shelter yourself, but that's effectively what has been happening in London and other parts of the UK for some years now.
EDIT - just to add, many establishments will keep the tips if they are paid by card. So if there's a "discretionary" service charge of whatever amount automatically added to the bill, where possible try and insist on paying just the cost of the meal by card and leave whatever tip you wish to leave in cash. That way the actual workers are more likely to get it. Best practice is for all tips to be shared between front-of-house staff and the cooks, kitchen porters etc.

I know, of the hundreds of meals I've eaten over there, I still never quite get used to their tipping system.
