Insure the car, book an MOT test close to home taking into account journey time, and drive it to the MOT station from where it is at the moment.
It will clean up the brake discs if nothing else A car need not be MOT tested, nor taxed or declared SORN if being driven to a pre arranged MOT test, and there is no stipulation as to where the test station is in relation to the car. The furthest I've done this is booking a car in for test in Newcastle and drove it from Nottingham, incidentally the car passed with no advisories, and that car had not been on the road for two years Have fun, it will be a mini adventure Brian |

Driving a vehicle that’s failed You can take your vehicle away if your MOT certificate is still valid. If your MOT has run out you can take your vehicle to: have the failed defects fixed I don't see any stipulation that it has to go "to a repair centre". What that wording means is that the only journey you can undertake after receiving an MOT failure is to a destination where the specified defects will be rectified. That could be your own home, but perhaps that's what you meant Sean! Simon

Although they may be classed as 3.5T (3500kg) vans, the actually chassis cabs weigh around 1750kg, the transporter body with ramps, winch, toolbox, straps, etc. will be about 400kg and a driver at maybe 100kg. This totals approx. 2250kg, so leaving a useable legal payload of only 1250kg. Equally, most of these vans have a maximum towing weight of 2000kg, so by the time you deduct 800kg for a suitably strong trailer, again they are not suitable for the carriage of any of our cars. Plus, to pull a trailer commercially, the towing vehicle must be fitted with an operational tachograph and the owner will need an operator licence if they wish to stay within the law (and hence for your vehicle to be insured). So please remember that the cheapest price from an on-line auction site, won't necessarily be the best or safest option. Properly rated equipment costs money - you get what you pay for... Good luck with the transport

[F55(2A)A vehicle is an exempt vehicle when it is being used by an authorised person solely for the purpose of warming up its engine in preparation for the carrying out of— (a)a compulsory test [F56or a reduced pollution test], or (b)a relevant re-examination that is to be carried out for the purposes of an appeal relating to a determination made on a compulsory test [F56or a reduced pollution test].] (3)Where the relevant certificate is refused on a compulsory test [F57, or a reduced pollution test,]of a vehicle [F58or as a result of a relevant re-examination,] the vehicle is an exempt vehicle when it is being used solely for the purpose of— (a)delivering it (by previous arrangement for a specified time on a specified date) at a place where relevant work is to be done on it, or (b)bringing it away from a place where relevant work has been done on it.
