Check the assigned COM port in Device Manager matches that in TOAF - if it doesn't, change it
I've had another look at getting TOAF to work. TOAF is saying the com port is COM3 and there is no other option. Device manager (XP) is saying that the cable is on COM4, but if I try to change it to COM3, is says that port is already in use by another device and gives a warning about changing it. There are no other devices connected, so I'm a bit baffled. I don't want to change it and find that I've stopped something else from working.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hhmmm, hard to say without seeing it... trouble is, I don't have TOAF (or even a Rover ) any more, so can't run it up on mine.

I *THOUGHT* you could change the port in TOAF... maybe somebody else could have a look on their laptop?

You probably wouldn't do much harm by changing the port in Device Manager, but as I'm not there to help you, I don't want to push you that way... there's not much that uses the COM ports these days, and if it's a modem or something it should reconfigure it to another port if you take one away, but I can't promise.

Success!

It turns out that the dial-up modem was on COM3. Yes, my laptop really is that old - I brought it out of retirement, specifically for TOAF.
Anyway, I've assigned COM5 to the modem and COM3 to the cable and it connects.

I just need to figure out how to use it now, without bricking the car.

Can't imagine you'll be using the modem much

Everything TOAF can alter is stored in files - if you study it all carefully, you'll see options to save the current config as a file before changing anything. That way, if you f it up, you can restore from backup and all will be hunky dory again

Really hope it helps you with your auto box - keep us posted
