The aux belt along with the aux belt tensioner and aux belt idler pulley have all been changed. Still the rattle occurs (hence my suspicions of the crank shaft pulley but as I stated in my first post, spraying water on to the crankshaft pulley while the rattle is present, doesn't change anything, the rattle persists (for a few minutes until the engine begin to warm slightly and then the rattle fades away).
(I have checked the upper inlet manifold flap rods and there wasn't any movement (up n down?) Can't remember there was play one way but not in the other direction that is said to be the play that causes the rattle, so I ruled the fanimold out.

I have watched the kv6 belt video on YouTube, looks easy in fairness (brand new engine, not in a car so.. will see how that pans out).

I don't have the latest tools and electro gadgets, hand tools mainly accompanied by longer bars for extra leverage on highly torqued bolts etc. (Usually a T bar and impact socket affair with different length tubing which slides over the handle of the T bar. (Broken many of those strong bars over the years, I find the swivel head joints snap).
Did the thermostat and all the belts, pulleys etc. myself not long after I got her with 118K (and plenty of past dealership invoices/history). Engine in situ. no special tools just worked my way through it using Haynes and lot's of how-to's off here. Marked the old belts and pulleys with correction fluid and just put all the new stuff back accordingly - bit of a ball ache but worked out fine.
Now done 165K and runs fine.
The rattle could just be the slightly drained oil galleries for the followers. As soon as the sytem becomes fully pressurised (and it starts to warm up) the noise disappears - I would suggest it's quite normal if indeed this is the issue you think you have.

My mechanic did say it could happily be left and that he would just get in and drive it instead of listening for the noise, so don't feel bad about ignoring it if it does turn out to be piston slap.

Thanks for the confidence boost. Well I'll have a fair amount of time free to tackle it while it's off the road. As I say, the noise happens sometimes, but not every cold start, I did think to myself earlier, just ignore the noise and tell myself it's oil reaching the cylinder head. I don't know how long it's been making the noise, we bought it like that at 63k miles.

The main worry is that it could be belt related (tensioner/idler etc) in which case it would need sorting soonest. You're doing the belts though, so any problems in that area would become apparent.

I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it one way or another .

The best help I have found for doing the KV6 belts (other than the manuals and tools of course) is an old MGR training video on you tube with a 90's presenter in a very 90's suit and an older technician in a shop coat. The technician goes through the belt procedure step by step with an engine on the bench. When I do belts I have the video on my lap-top and advance and reverse it as I go along.
One thing to note is how easy all the fasteners undo for him. Not only is there no car in the way but that demo engine has probably been apart 100 times!
