Now done 165K and runs fine. The rattle could just be the slightly drained oil galleries for the followers. As soon as the sytem becomes fully pressurised (and it starts to warm up) the noise disappears - I would suggest it's quite normal if indeed this is the issue you think you have. Thanks for the confidence boost. Well I'll have a fair amount of time free to tackle it while it's off the road. As I say, the noise happens sometimes, but not every cold start, I did think to myself earlier, just ignore the noise and tell myself it's oil reaching the cylinder head. I don't know how long it's been making the noise, we bought it like that at 63k miles.

The main worry is that it could be belt related (tensioner/idler etc) in which case it would need sorting soonest. You're doing the belts though, so any problems in that area would become apparent.
I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it one way or another . Cliff

The best help I have found for doing the KV6 belts (other than the manuals and tools of course) is an old MGR training video on you tube with a 90's presenter in a very 90's suit and an older technician in a shop coat. The technician goes through the belt procedure step by step with an engine on the bench. When I do belts I have the video on my lap-top and advance and reverse it as I go along.
One thing to note is how easy all the fasteners undo for him. Not only is there no car in the way but that demo engine has probably been apart 100 times!
