That's interesting, where exactly do they pass each other?

In this photo of a LH bank inlet manifold gasket the circular port at the bottom right carries coolant. You can also see the three intake ports which pass mixed petrol and air. The bright blue line is the elastomer seal with a defect above no. 5 port. Simon

Silly question and every day's a learning day but which is left and which is right - I'm thinking about it front and back!
Presuming left front right back which means look at the V from the nearside? Last edited by BillyMG; 18th December 2021 at 17:06.. |

It goes back to before the age of transverse engines. The front of the engine is always where the crankshaft pulley is. Simon

I've tightened all those bolts up and used new gaskets. If that were leaking wouldn't I see some coolant in the V? It's bone dry in there...

And where No 1 cylinder is, except for some old Jag engines. 😉

Not necessarily Billy. If you look again at the photo, imagine a possible break in the circular seal surrounding the coolant port which creates a passage between coolant and no. 5 cylinder intake. In that particular case there would be no route for coolant to enter the 'V'. However I would also expect coolant to be sucked into no. 5 cylinder.
I'm not saying that this has definitely happened on your car, I'm simply reading the evidence you've presented and trying to suggest possible causes. A smell of unburnt petrol in the expansion tank is unusual to say the least! Simon

Even if it's a flat four there will always be one bore and piston nearest to the crank pulley.
