Cheap diesel not as economical
With the cost of fuel getting pricey these days, over the last few weeks I tried filling up the car at a cheap place near work. It cost me 1.55 euros for a litre of diesel, while other garages are from 1.60 euros and up.
Now I do the same route to work and back and dropping off child to school in morning. Outcome of 2 fill-ups at the cheap place got 42 mpg. On 3rd fill up at the regular price garage got 47 mpg. No change in driving, weather similar. Car averaged between 47 and 50 normally over the past year with fuel from regular price garages. With the cheap fuel, I first noticed this lower mpg as the needle was hitting the 3/4 earlier than before. What is the content difference in this cheaper fuel? |

Interesting question. But difficult to answer.---
However, as the price difference is only .05 of a Euro it's probably not worth going for the cheaper stuff.--- |

Agree, it actually costs more overall due to the lower mpg.

I did quite a lot of comparison over thousands of miles using supermarket fuel and Shell V-Power. The V-Power have about a 6%-7% improvement in MPG. The car also felt much more responsive.
These days I use either V-Power (petrol and diesel) or ordinary shell plus Millers Ecomax in the diesel. |

It's been like that for years, when I was traveling 80 miles a day many years ago I always got more to the gallon from such as Shell, BP or Texaco, the supermarket fuel used to be 6-8mpg less

If you've got a fuel burning heater, that might make MPG worse if it's cold enough to make it operate.

Same tank , but you will see that the different delivery chains fill up at different gantries . Different additives are added to different retailers

Not really, because it helps the engine warm up faster than it would otherwise. Over the course of a full tank it barelyj reduces mpg, on a cold week it probably even helps keep mpg up. (commuting every day).

Its very similar to supermarket washing up liquid and Fairy. You pay less for the supermarket liquid but you have to use more to do the same job. Additives enhance the way the diesel burns etc thus a better product but at a cost.
