From what I can gather the garage would have to get approval from Tesla before fitting a new battery with no guarantee it would fix the problem.

I know that in the US independent specialists are supplying new batteries at round about 6000 dollars or so. The problem with that is if you let anyone other than Tesla to do anything with the car, they won't touch it in the future.
So if you need an essential software update for example, you've had it.

Yes total monopoly. Tesla also block those cars from their super charger network & also block it from using other networks DC fast chargers reducing it to only being able to charge on the EVSE trickle charger that came with the car or a type 2 charger.
