Default Cost of rear sill repairs

Having purchased 2 sill repair panels from Tom Hobbs for my now out of MOT Connie, I’ve been quoted around £450 to fit them by a local garage including painting. As I’m stuck and can’t drive about for other quotes, does this sound a fair price ?

Probably about right for a decent job, it all depends what they do when they remove the outer, if the jacking point needs repairing etc, ask to see the inside when they have removed the outers, I have seen some garages just fit the outer without treating anything inside!!

I had mine replaced recently, the price of £450 is a fair one but when they strip it down they might find it requires more work, depends on how far it has gone.

Just cost me about £450 plus me supplying the Tom Hobbs sills due to the jacking points above falling to pieces and having to be re-engineered and welded in.

Original quote for just fitting the sills before discovering the state of the jacking points was about £200 ish

None of this included respraying

Thanks for the replies lads . I was basing my question on having the job done a couple for years ago by Tom Hobbs who supplied and fitted both panels to my tourer all primed and ready for painting by myself . He only charged me £230 for the full job so the cost of a return train fare of £93 between Ilkeston and Durham was still a bargain in my eyes. I would have booked in with Tom again but we were locked down last year and this year I caught Covid and was so ill that I still haven't returned to work suffering long Covid and receiving physio therapy and therapy for PTSD and anxiety so travelling has been a huge issue for me.

As I can't drive with no MOT , Dave Johnson , who failed the car, suggested the garage next to him would be worth asking rather than patching the sills and having to do the job again in a couple of years . He's right and it makes sense as I like the car and it's SE spec . I'll keep the appointment on the 31st Jan and look forward to getting her back on the road.

I'm considering trying this myself. My first step will be to practice welding technique on panel steel from a spare damaged door. If that goes ok I will take the plunge.

Transport is a real factor as MOT has expired - car would need to go on trailer.

On the up side just got insurance for 12 months for £112. Hope I will get some use from it. Maybe insurance company noticed car was on SORN.

Try practicing on some sill section, the door is a tad thicker and will lull you into a false sense of security!

Thanks for that. I thought it would be the other way round. Also have some 0.9mm steel sheets - is that better for practice?

20 plus years ago I was welding cars with oxy acetylene , long given up when I started working for my current employer. I've never used a mig welder and to re invest in tools would be to much and I don't fancy spending time on the drive during winter to sort out the car so I have to give the car to someone else to do it for me which I'm finding it hard to accept but I'm also 20 years older.

I've probably still got my number 2 and 3 welding nozzles somewhere in the garage along with my Ford Cortina void bush removal tool !
