If I remember correctly there is a vent pipe for the fuel tank in there. Repaired the conduit on Mrs Noc's car using an old bit of exhaust pipe cut into two halves and clamped together over the rusted out section.

Having looked at all the photo's, am I right in thinking there is a large gaping hole in the wheel arch which allows quite a large amount of water to run down it?

Yes! The end of this tube exits into the wheel arch, I always fill mine with dinitrol or ACF50 then seal the end with silicone to stop the water ingress.

Unlikely as it sits high above the fuel tank, ive never seen one rot at that end.
