Default Self assembly?

Just ordered (and cancelled) a couple of dining chairs from one of the "Oak" furniture suppliers. At around £160 for two chairs, I expected them to be "made". Turns out that they are self assembly. My last "self assembly" chairs have broken due to the poor design of the "joints", which aren't (joints that is) but are allen bolts which lock into retaining heads in the rear legs. The trouble is, that they don't (retain) as they have all come loose from the legs (the retaining heads) so that they cannot be tightened. I may just get some "proper" old chairs from the auctions up the road. Anyone else fed up with rubbish "modern" furniture that you have to replace every couple of years?

We never buy modern stuff. Most everything in our home is vintage/antique & my wife makes a tolerable living dealing in it too, enough to keep me in lorry driving anyway.

When ever I assemble this type of furniture I always use some wood glue, I have been doing a bit of it recently as one of my boys has bought a house and they have bought some of this stuff. He was telling me that it does not say that in the instructions but as you have said the allen screw will not hold it for ever. The draws were just supposed to be pushed together, how is that ever going to last?
The problem is they dont want it to last, remember the old Ikea adverts where everything went in the bin after a few years?

The hot glue gun is good for making drawer packs last. Just run a bead along the joints for extra strength.

A couple of years back, a friend of mine bought an electric fan from Robert Dyas to help in the summer. When he realised there was a certain amount of "self assembly" required, he re-visited the store to explain that there had been some sort of misunderstanding. He said he was under the impression that he had purchased a fan, but had now discovered that he had in fact, seemingly enrolled in some sort of self assembly DIY class.

To be fair to Rober Dyas, after listening to his rant (all delivered in a very polite and calm manner, as was his style), they gave him a full refund and said he could keep the fan !
