No manual, 5 spd. Could never understand why people drove a Stag with auto.

So what is 'character' if it's not an older car with issues?

Mine has never had an issue in two years that I have owned it. But has a lot more character than our much newer Suzuki, Which although it does the job, has no soul.

Or the VW up that we had before the Suzuki, which I rather liked. It was fitted with the sport kit. It felt like, what I would describe as a modern mini, not the BMW version of a mini. However, although it was nearly new, had several "issues" and broke down totally. It had to go!

Have driven both with auto and manual trans, original 3.0 V8 is ok as an auto but the RV8 3.5 is so much more civilised as an auto, the ratios are near perfect for that configuration and displacement, i thought the torque characteristics of the RV8 had been compromised with the stick.
Just my opinion really, other peeps may love the manual option.

Nope, LT77 over Borg Warner 65 every time, now bearing in mind I'm driving an automatic at the minute and fitting a new DMF and clutch tomorrow, I cant wait to get back behind the wheel of a car with a real gearbox.

Automatics are not for me I'm afraid

Me too, had many of both and for the past few years have preferred autos. Mainly due to the fact I drive many miles a year in my manual van and getting into an auto feels like bliss

Oh, and I'm getting a lazy NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- too!

I bought my 75 cdt as a manual but if it had come with an auto box ... i wouldn't have been upset, have had a few auto's over the years and have come to the conclusion that ... if you're going to have an auto ... make sure it's coupled to a BIG shouty motor.

Cars with character, difficult choice as it’s all personal choice. I believe my classic cooper S, Rover 200 coupe and 75 tourer all have character. Saying that, had our 75 tourer not been what it is I don’t think we would still own one to the point it’s no longer a daily driver. I drive newer cars most days and for me the 75 is starting to feel like an older car trying to keep up. It’s nice to get back into the 75 but when you drive newer cars there is a difference. Cars are built to a different set of ideals today so you generally won’t get much wood trim but the 75 was slated for this for being too retro when launched by some journalists. If you compare cars from then to now you have to put things in the same class, compare the 75 against what today’s competition would of been, a 3 series or an A4, not an entry level model from a manufacturer. I don’t see us selling our tourer as we are quite attached to it but a modern day car with character, i’ll have a Hyundai i30N please....

Character is a bit like beauty. It is that which people use to describe their feelings about something which cannot be measured or substantiated .

In my view a person's view of whether something has character tells you more about the person than the entity being observed.

The75/ZT models have character but there are modern cars with more character than these.

My Omega Estate has abundance of character, comfort and performance i.e. character, as does Mrs MSS' Astra Twintop but for different reasons.

I would also say that our Corsa 1.2 has a lot of character - every drive in the car is a pleasure.
