Fortunately it appears to be turning to rain, I'm snaffling a slice of toast and enjoying a bucket of coffee.

So it's a PSA diesel, my own experiences of diesels built by PSA are shall we say.....very good.

It goes without saying, any car I decide to buy will have the oil changed at sensible intervals, something I noted when speaking to a friend with a Mini fitted with an N47 BMW diesel that required timing chain replacement at 60,000 miles.

So much for 20,000 mile oil change regime

Brian
I Change the oil on the wife’s N47 diesel lump every 6 thousand miles, the blood of the engine is paramount to its longevity

Our old Cooper diesel was terrible, reliable but terrible. The service interval indicator would drop from 19,000 miles to 0 in less than a year when it had actually covered around 12,000 miles. The timing chain rattled on overrun, funnily enough our local dealer couldn’t hear it nor confirm they had issues. The car used to smell like it was on fire due to excessive dpf regens from new and we even took a video of the car on the dealer forecourt in which it looked like it was on fire due to the smoke from under the bonnet...... sorry sir, no fault found

If I ever go for a Volvo, it'll probably be one of these - no costly DPF or turbo issues to worry about.

Hmm, not so sure about that - there are prettier classics out there!

I have a V50 and considered these when I was looking. I find it comfortable quite and refined and hold the value well. It is very practical but can feel a bit cramped surprisingly. Based on the Focus it handles well but is put together a lot better. So far only minor easily and cheaply fixed issues needed. Cleaning the air sensor to sort out intermittent hot start and occasional rough running and a stone trapped between disc and back plate, sounded horrendous. Rest just servicing tyres and pads.

I considered the diesels including this model but after consulting owners and my local independent Volvo garage I went for a 1.8 petrol. Why? well its got the best reliability record, the Mazda engine doesn't suffer from the problems that can be common to the Peugeot diesels causing issues running and starting, aside to poor servicing causing Turbo issues. They also do not need belts or a particulate filter, which if you have to pay someone for it doing is expensive. Together with being told the model less seen in for repairs was the 1.8 petrol and not far behind the 2.0 petrol. The garage said it was the diesels that keep him in business, if they were all petrol he would need to branch out. So with that expert information and less maintenance cost it was the one I chose. A big consideration was the fact that most diesels on sale were at a mileage that would soon require belts and or DPF sorting. I supposed the reasoning they were for sale was the cost to do the work

Whichever you go for I am sure you will be happy with it and with your skills working on them will not be an issue.

That looks like a nice example Brian, but I would say that as I'm a bit of a Volvo fan, especially the latest models. They're beautifully designed and built. Had an 850-R estate years ago and that was something else, wish I'd kept it.

Nah. that's not a proper Volvo.

You want something like this -> https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1993-Volv....c100005.m1851
