Default Head gasket

Hi, i have a 1.8 club year 2000 engine that needs a new head gasket, its in a car that i have bought for spares. I am thinking of replacing the gasket myself with the help of my father who has done 3 or 4 head gaskets himself over the years, but on older cars.Any advice on what i need to buy (best gasket) and from where would be very usefull aswell any information- tips that you could pass along to me.
Thankyou in advance
Chrisrc.

I think the MLS (multi layer system) gasket is the one that's recommended. I assume the like of Rimmers and SMC will sell it? I think you the upgraded oil rail is required/advised but someone else no doubt will explain - good luck!

Thanks for the reply, i have just been looking on rimmers site and cant find the head gasket set or price of them, i have also looked at xpart and can only find where the nearest dealer is. I was hoping to find out how much the gasket set is and what is required, i will keep looking though as i know there's loads of info on this forum its just piecing it together.

Rimmer's catalogue (the one you get through the post box) has the following:

K-series Head Gasket and improved Oil Rail Set
This is the MLS gasket, together with the oil rail and new head bolts.

Full kit Part Number: ZUA000080 £133.93 incl VAT (presumably less now, following the Chancellor's cut)

Or in bits:
Part No:LVB500190 Head Gasket only £51.74 incl VAT
Part No:LLCN00140L Oil Rail only £33.35 incl VAT
Part No:WAM2293 Bolt (each) £6.73 incl VAT

The photo also shows two small dowels. I assume these go with the gasket if bought separately.

You'd be wise to renew the timing belt and water pump at the same time.
