Results from todays investigations
Toady I went through the process detailed by Lates previously and I can report that everything seems fine.
I can detect no play (vertical or horizontal) on either front wheel, nor does the suspension have any play in it on either wheel. So I'm now kinda stumped. Does this mean my car is fine and I am just feeling the results of MG's uber-hard suspension on the original cars or could there be something else to investigate....? |

im having same trouble with my 75 cdti. Noise appears and its felt through steering wheel. It comes on slow speeds when turning to right and back and going over bumps.
one guy told me that it might be thrust bearing, but then another guy said that they never break :S |

Si,
Is it possibly the engine under tray flapping around? check the clips are screwed home. this would sound like knocking over uneven surface. Any free play in the suspension components can be hidden as the supension and springs hold all the parts tight when its jacked up.... try jacking it up and using a lever or bar under the tyre and gently lever the wheel up/down checking for movement in the joints and bushes. For the side to side movement...first make sure the cars is supported well, get some one to REALLY tug the road wheel quickly left and right, put some effort into it so that it shows up any free play...but make sure the car is on proper stands.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. As I can't seem to narrow it down precisely I'll let Lates have a look over later this month and see if his and Pete can determine what could be happening.
Jamie: Did this all on Sunday just gone. Jacked the car up and performed said tests but nothing came of it... So far as I could tell everything felt tight and I couldn't detect any play. However, that is not to say there isn't any - just that I may not have yanked hard enough to show it up. PS: It's not the engine tray - that came once before in the past and that was an all together different noise - and one that caused me to limp home very steadily to avoid it ripping off completely!! |

Me too! I have exactly the same thing, not really loud but noticeable.
I have the dreaded M.O.T on friday so I will be able to tell you if it fails on it! (1999 75 CDT, 130,000 miles) Never failed one yet so expecting something this year... |

Mine just passed its MOT with no advisorys, so guessing no actual problem with it, would be interested to see what others come up with. There is a very definate knocking at low speed just as described!

Have you considered this http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=165911
This car is my 52 reg 75 tourer which started having noises over bumps and when going on/off the throttle at low speeds at about 30,000 miles. No one could find the cause until Dr Dave got on the case. Just a suggestion. |
