Rusty sills

Hi,
general question. Are there any photos of 75 rusted sills the forum. My mechanic wants to see something to give him an idea of what to expect! Many thanks!

That looks like a Tom Hobbs sill - you can find them on E Bay - he used to do the cars himself but is so busy with big restorations he restricts himself to making front, rear and middle sills for 75's/ZT's on E bay . They are the best and top quality - get one for your shop to weld.

I had my sills done by Tom Hobbs when he was still under taking the work, which I'm now informed he does not, but does supply the parts for the job.

Like an idiot I scraped my nearside sill along a Tesco trolley bay, resulting in considerable damage to the sill and trim, but luckily none at all to either door.

Tom made me two sill panels which, when welded together, would replace the damaged area from about half way along the front door to the back of the sill. He explained why it was made in two parts but I didn't follow.

As @Arctic says, he wasn't interested in fitting them, so I visited a couple of body shops in Nottingham to see if they would take on the work. I decided on a firm called Fleetcare. The chap there said he would much rather try to repair the existing sill panel with his puller tools than replace it, because cutting the original out and welding in a new one is a bigger job, more invasive and is generally a less "elegant" solution.

We agreed that he would try the repair first, and if it isn't successful then he would cut and weld in the new sections. So I might have bought the panels from Tom unnecessarily. If so, I'll stick them on eBay so someone else can benefit from them.

Everyone who has examined the damage commented on the unusually good condition of the sills - apparently it is normal to find a considerable amount of rot near the jacking points, but on mine there is none at all.

Incidentally, Rimmers stock the long trim that runs the full length of the sill along its top edge, just under the doors. They also stock those plates that you can see on the top surface of the sill when you open the doors (the front ones have 'Rover' engraved on them) and they are remarkably cheap: less than £20 (but plus VAT). You get both the plastic backing and the aluminium trim as one part.

I'll report back on the quality of the work when it's finished.

Today I collected my Rover 75 from RLM custom in Trefeglwys, Mid Wales, been in the body shop for 11 days. I sent a link to Arctic's pictures to show what they could expect. Original estimate to replace both sides rear sills and jacking points was
£1365.00. I supplied Tom Hobbs sills, jacking points and sill trim clips from Rimmers. Luke called me once they had started and said they had opened up a tin of worms!
The bill ended up at £1465.00 as it turned out that the nearside sill had previously been badly kerbed and filled, he had to take the filler out and pull the sill to weld the new panel to it.
He showed me the bits that they had cut out. Both rear sills had previously been patched, offside jacking point had a new base very badly welded to it, nearside jacking point rotten and the base was detached, the only thing holding the sills together was plenty of stone chip, totally rusted through!
So with parts supplied and workshop costs £1,800.
Hopefully I will now get a lot more time with Starlight, until the front sills need doing.
