A career dilema...which way to jump
I am in a bit of tiz at the moment...having recently moved up slightly with the Training company I have worked for since 2006, I was starting to get stuck into the role when out of nowhere two companies who employ proffesional head hunters have tried to tempt me away.
Normally I wouldnt hesitate for the better conditions, but given the IVF programme that the wife and I are on...I am nervous about swithching jobs when there is so much to deal with at home....the trouble is, my current company are in a lot of upheaval...jobs switches, people leaving and reorganisations combined with an ever increasing work load mean that its a really stressful place to be at the moment. I dont want to worry the wife wieth my concerns at the moment...but I truly dont know what to do...one of the jobs is back with one of the mega Utilities so id be paid more...but just one of 8500 other 'numbers'...the other job is with a competitor...and of course they really are laying on the flattery thickly.....I am tempted...I really am....but I am hesitant.... Dont know why I am telling you all this...but you know what they say about a problem shared hey? Now wheres my Crystal ball....

Surely the offer of better conditions and more pay would more than compensate for any slight anguish regarding job change. As long as it does not mean anything drastic like moving house, in which case I would rather stick hot needles in my eyes having gone through that just recently.

I understand when you say that you don't want to worry your other half, but surely this is a decision you should discuss and make together?

yes...you are both right....i have discussed it, and on the face of it...I should go for the job....with the competitor. I am just hesitating for some reason, I guess its because so much has happened in sucha short time, the promotion, the IVF, the chrysler, the job offer...I am reeling a little.
I need to dissapear to a sunny shore for a while in peace and quiet to make the decision, i am worried of making a mistake as my job is now more important than ever. Still...I need a sign

Jamie, my two penneth for what it is worth is that I have found job security becomes more important as I get older, as opposed to what could be short lived "mega bucks".
Difficult in these times to ensure security but it would be one of my priorities to be able to provide (hopefully ) longterm for family. Best of luck fella..

I have a fairly similar dilemma.......
I'm looking at a job in Nelson, Lancashire (a place I know nothing about) We currently live in Lincolnshire The job is almost identical to the one I am in now, and although it's NHS, it's a fairly specialist field, and I know that I'd be in with a fairly good shout, as there's not many folks who would have the same experience Would mean an initial salary hike from £25K to £42K, so quite a rise - especially as it goes to £52K in 5 years and my current job only goes to £32K... BUT It would mean moving from Lincolnshire, as no way am I going to commute 120 miles each way every day, and also no way I'd be happy to go up on Monday and come back Friday If we did move, it would be a big decision, as we'd be leaving friends and family (although not exactly the other side of the world is it?) Also the salary hike represents pretty much what Gill is on now, so to be actually any better off, we would have to make sure she was in a similarly paid job too! I'm betting I go for the low risk option of convincing myself not to even apply for it! |

For what its worth Jamie, reading between the lines, considering all the worries you both must have at the moment your present job is a known quantity and what you need is stability.I am sure headhunters are around all the time and security is what you might need at the present time. I hope I'm not being too personal but I have seen a similar situation with my son-in-law and his new employers( he was headhunted) are really putting pressure on him .I hope this helps a tad, lots of freinds on here I'm sure.Good luck to you both.Pete
