Default Tractor / mower 14.5HP B&S oil level

This catches me out every time...

I top up the oil to the full mark, then I get smoke, oil blown up the breather into the air filter and rough running. Adjust the oil level to well below the dipsticks bottom level and it runs fine.

I am beginning to this dipstick is the wrong one, shorter than it should be. Anyone happen to have a little tractor fitted with a B&S 14.5 HP electric start engine, with electric start 28??? range and could check the length of their dipstick please?

Tractor was bought SH, so dipstick might have been swapped/ modified.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Thanks, mine is just at the far end of the back garden and I will get the full details from the engine later.

Mine is a 12.5hp but if a 28 series I/C engine, I suspect the dispstick will most likely be the same.

You could check on the B&S parts diagrams and if they are the same, I will happily go out and measure.

You do know that to check the level of the oil you have to screw the dip stick right in and then unscrew it to get the reading on the dip stick. If you only hold it at the top of the thread it will show a low level and you end up putting to much oil in.

I just had a look Harry and it seems you can download the manual for your engine on line. You should be able to tell from that how much oil the engine holds.
Then empty and re-fill will give you an accurate check on the dip stick as to whether it is the correct one or not.---------

I have managed to download the service and maintenance sheets, but not what I would call a manual for the engine describing a strip and rebuild. It would be good to know whether there was supposed to be be some sort of means in the engine vent tube to prevent oil being splashed up into the air filter. The splashing up seems to be the problem, which was why I thought the level might be too high.

When I have changed the oil, I have been quite surprised at how much it has needed to bring the level up to the line, which was another reason I wondered if someone might have fitted a wrong (too short) dipstick. Once the level drops due to splashing, the engine runs much better, so I tend to deliberately let it run low.
