Advice required on new ignition barrel,keys etc (SOLVED)
2002 Connie 2.5 V6...my present ignition barrel is playing up so I have decided to purchase a new or good 2nd hand one.
My present one is driving me up the wall and as far as I'm concerned only fit for the bin!!! IF I do obtain a new or 2nd hand one and transfer the electrics from my keys to the replacement ones supplied, plus transfer my transponder reader to the ignition barrel supplied will they continue to work as normal? I ask this, as below is the answer I had from Xparts. This is the reply I had from Xpart suppliers: Hi Derek, The keys for all R75 are cut to VIN otherwise the vehicle will not start, there are no key blanks for R75’s available. The electrics and transponder reader that you have will not programme the key to operate the central locking unless it is a T4 but the key will still need to cut to VIN as it activates the immobiliser. The cost for a new key is £157.58 + VAT and takes around 7-10 days to arrive. Yes all you need is a replacement ignition barrel complete with key blades
Swapping it over you need to put your old one in position 1 and you will see two indents that align to make a hole. Insert a piece of suitable sized diameter stiff wire into the hole to release the catch. It can take bit of fiddling about but once the catch is released you should be able to withdraw the lock. If you get a replacement then you'll be able to see how it all works The transponder rings are not coded so if your replacement one has one on you don't need to swap your original one over To fit the replacement insert key into lock turn to position 1 and then slide in the lock it will only locate properly in the correct position. Once done swap the replacement key blades on to your original key cases or transfer the remote board and transponder chip over and you should be good to go It's up to you if you want to change the door/ boot locks if fitted, but recommend you do otherwise you'll have to carry around the other key in case you need to unlock the car should the battery go flat Russ

Its a few years ago now but I purchased a new barrel only, with the lock built to the VIN so I could use the three existing good keys . I only changed it as the barrel was jammed & wouldn't lock when you removed the key. It meant that any of the three keys worked all the vehicle locks as original.

With the new barrel in place keys move in and out like new (which of course they are). Biggest job was tearing the front door apart, remove the glass and replace the locking mechanism to suit new keys, all in all took about 3 hours in the brilliant Devon sunshine. One tip, rather than prise off the card reader around the barrel, which in my case is 19yrs old with the plastic looking extremely brittle!!I just held the old barrel gently in a vice then with a 1/4" bladed screwdriver blunt ended, not knife edge,just gently tapped equally around the four hold down segments and sure enough within seconds the card reader popped off totally intact and unmarked. My sincere thanks to Clinte, Russ, Chris, Trikey and of course not forgetting Terry. Should have made the point that "Terry" drove 4hrs (round trip 8 hours!) to come to my aid,and talk about his knowledge, I went in to make a coffee and in that time he had changed barrel, swopped over electrics in keys plus replaced covers around steering column and was starting on door card.Really nice guy who really knows his Rovers,a pleasure to discuss car with him, plus to see frist hand his professionalism. He was even prepared to change steering column, but decided mine was in good shape so stayed with it...
