Finding Jack Charlton
Anybody watch the documentary last night? Having worked for Jack and Pat since he retired from management I found it very interesting. Maybe there should be more managers like him. He was in charge and his players knew it.

Yes indeed. A great man of the people who achieved so much in his career at club level, was part of the great 1966 World Cup England team and as manager took the Rep. of Ireland team to meteoric heights. He is an iconic figure in Ireland.
A pity that was not honoured with a knighthood like his brother. He did much to heal the wounds at a crucial time in the peace process. We’ll not see the likes of him again. So sad that dementia robbed him of his memories in later life. But the good that he did lives on. May he rest in peace. |

I have never been interested in football, when I first started going to their house I had been going for a few months and he was out cutting the grass, after he finished he asked if I had seen the weekend’s match and when I told him I didn’t follow football he said something like”are you having me on lad,a Geordie that doesn’t like football ,must be something wrong with you!”. He never really chatted to me much after that but we always exchanged a hello, however the last few times I saw him I could see he wasn’t the same Jack, Pat had to prompt him to say hello if I spoke to him. He had already retired from management by the time I started working for them.

I did watch it. Jack was more able than some in football in my opinion and a linchpin within his close family. His son in that TV show I think showed great fortitude to do what he did in memory of his dad, along with his mum.
I remember Jack's appearance on the Mike Parkinson show when Jack was a fit young England team player. |

My next door neighbour was with a group of friends many years ago having a drink in a pub, conversation turned to football and Leeds United. there was a disagreement as to who played in what position in a certain match.
Two tables away sat having a quiet pint was none other than Jack Charlton. My neighbour will never forget the conversation " Hey Jack", no answer, "Jack," no answer, "Jack mate," no answer. " Excuse me Mr Charlton," " Yes son what can i do for you" Typical of the man.

Jack was a footballer at heart. Good to turn the opposing player in one direction while going at speed in another with the ball in play at your feet but that was not Jack's forte. Football is a team effort. To play with the ball you gotta have players who can gain possession of it, and defend when you don't. Enter the likes of Jack.
